Chapter 9 Nights Vigilance

The night passed in a blur of vigilance and calculated efficiency. Jingyi, her emotions suppressed even more to the degree of stoicism, focused solely on her objective: to feed herself. Having narrowly escaped the clutches of a relentless bear, only to lose her hard-earned meal, hunger gnawed at her insides with increasing intensity, weakening her body with each passing moment.

Leaving the safety of the cave, Jingyi surveyed her surroundings with a clinical gaze, her senses sharpened by the urgency of her situation. Yet, to her dismay, no rabbits or small animals ventured near the cave, as if instinctively avoiding it. Jingyi's analytical mind swiftly deduced a grim possibility: the cave likely belonged to a large ferocious animal or an animal on the cusp of transformation into a demonic beast.

Drawing upon her knowledge as a former system, Jingyi delved into her limited database of this world. She saw that the animals of this world could undergo a transition into demonic beasts however that required a catalyst like a spiritual fruit or grass to ease the process. With this realization, Jingyi decided that the best course of action would be to leave the cave behind and seek out the necessary sustenance elsewhere.

Following the marks she had made on the trees, Jingyi pushed her body to the brink of collapse as she trudged through the forest. She kept moving despite her growing fatigue and ravenous hunger. Eventually, her relentless perseverance led her to a clearing where a breathtaking spectacle unfolded before her eyes.

In the heart of the clearing, a fierce battle raged between the massive black bear that had chased her previously and a majestic tiger with fur adorned in patches of striking white. Each movement was filled with primal fury as the two predators clashed with unbridled ferocity.

The bear, its fur matted with blood and fury burning in its eyes, lunged at the tiger with savage intent. Yet, the tiger, its movements fluid and precise, met each attack with a grace born of ancient instinct. With a roar that reverberated through the clearing, the tiger defended itself with graceful but fierce movements, protecting something precious amidst the chaos of battle.

As the confrontation reached its climax, Jingyi's gaze fell upon a stem adorned with a fiery red fruit, suspended tantalizingly above the fray. It exuded vitality as the grass nearby were fuller and lusher than those further away.

Though the bear fought relentlessly, driven by instinctual aggression, it soon found itself outmatched by the tiger's superior skill and agility. With a final, desperate swipe, the bear retreated, its body battered and broken, while the tiger, wounded but victorious, claimed the coveted fruit as its prize.

Seemingly filled with intelligence the tiger cupped the fruit in its mouth and headed towards Jingyi. She could not move as it would alert the creature and maybe cause it to attack so she readied her sword. The tiger however paid her no heed, its focus solely on its precious prize. With a regal stride, it walked past Jingyi without so much as a glance in her direction, its powerful form disappearing into the depths of the forest.

Jingyi watched as the tiger vanished, leaving her unharmed and bewildered. As the adrenaline of the encounter began to ebb away, Jingyi's exhaustion caught up with her, her limbs heavy with fatigue and her mind clouded with weariness.

Without hesitation, Jingyi followed after the wounded bear, her footsteps silent as she moved with calculated precision through the dense undergrowth. She kept a safe distance, mindful of the danger posed by the injured beast.

As the bear's movements grew more sluggish and erratic, Jingyi sensed that it was nearing the end of its struggle. She knew that this was her moment to strike, to claim her prize before another predator could swoop in and steal it away.

Drawing upon her knowledge of wilderness survival, Jingyi scanned her surroundings for a suitable vantage point from which to make her move. Spotting a sturdy tree nearby, she quickly darted behind its thick trunk, using its cover to conceal her presence from the bear's sharp senses.

Quietly she climbed up the tree and then leaped from branch to branch, her movements swift and sure-footed despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. Each jump brought her closer to her target, until finally, she reached the branch directly above the wounded bear.

As Jingyi stood atop the tree, gazing down at the the wounded body of the bear below, she felt a pang of emotion, her heart began to rapidly beat so much so she almost lost her footing and fell. She found these emotions were normally manageable but every once in a while they would they would act up like this. Taking some time she steadied herself and managed to calm her rapidly beating heart.

Jingyi retrieved her sword and from this vantage point, she could see the vulnerable spot on the bear's neck, exposed and unprotected. The bear was breathing heavily as it writhed in pain. Balancing precariously on the narrow perch, Jingyi poised herself for the decisive strike. With a steady hand, she gripped her sword tightly, its blade gleaming in the dappled moonlight.

Taking a deep breath to steady her nerves, Jingyi with a swift and fluid motion, she plunged the blade downward with all her might. Aiming for the vulnerable spot on the bear's neck. The blade sank deep into the bear's flesh, eliciting a guttural roar of pain as the wounded creature thrashed.

The force of the impact reverberated through Jingyi's body as the sword sank deep into the bear's flesh, eliciting a roar of pain and fury from the wounded creature below. Yet, even as the bear continued thrashing about in its death throes, Jingyi remained still, her focus unwavering as she plunged the blade in deeper, delivering the final blow.

With a swift and final, decisive strike, Jingyi ended the bear's life. As soon as the realization that she had done it hit her, all her strength seemed to leave her body as she fell off the bear’s back. Slamming into the ground Jingyi felt all the pain and fatigue that she had accumulated surge forth. Looking over at the bear’s corpse said Jingyi in a cold inhuman voice “Newly added Mission Accomplished: Acquire sustenance.”
