Chapter 11: War

With how little the commotion they caused in the forest their night was undisturbed and when morning finally arrived. Everyone gathered around the table. The sun was still low that the trees masked most of the sunlight, making the place darker than it should have been.

"It seems their scouts are nearing our base. I want one of you to go and deal with them".

There were just four of them not including Noir and Nero deciding who goes only took a moment. The one to go did not waste anytime and went deeper into the forest vanishing from everyone's eye view.

"Since we're relieving them of their scouts, why don't we give them a clear view of our base".

Said Noir who noticed with how far away the emperial forces were and how they were likely unaware of their location.

"Allow me major. I'm among the best in terms of precision".

Zeth nominated himself. Noir laughed finding the statement to be ridiculous. Zeth, who nominated himself with confidence could not help but shrink on himself.

"Precision you say, magic is the manipulation of mana to create phenomenon, is it even possible to not have precision over the scale of said phenomenon. Go ahead show me this precision other magic lacks".

While he was talking, Thran the one to eliminate the scouts returned. He looked the same as just when he left not even a crease on his clothes to show he was in a fight.

"I have returned, all the scouts have been dealt with. I even blocked their telepathic messages".

"We're not playing a game of hide and seek, you didn't have to go that far, but it's all right they're about to get a bee line path to our base, graduate B you know what to do".

Zeth who had waited for any new orders stood up, leaving the table with his back turned to it. He was facing east the direction the holy empire was coming from. Between his hands a bubble of air was compressed and burst when he clapped. The shockwave generated was very destructive, but Zeth's control was even more impressive. No sound could be heard from it and only what he wanted destroyed was affected. Everything thing before them was cleared out with a radius of 1km not even a cm more. Everything within the affected area was gone except the army, looking at the aftermath of the blast one could mistake it to be a result of erasure, which left nothing behind.

"Maybe I'm blind but I isn't your precision just average. We can't just stand and wait for them. Go deal with them, I'll step in later".

All four graduates ran towards the charging army, while he remained with Nero to watch as they felled knight after knight. But it wasn't interesting to him so he did not pay much attention to it.

"Nero do you think making you, accomplished my objective. At present I think not".

Nero who wasn't even fully aware of the actual objective remained silent and watched as Noir began to construct something else.

"At the time I used my own darkness, so in a way I actually skipped a few steps. I want to try it once more but this time with something else, not darkness and not just one aspect but hybrid".

In his hands fire and electricity respectively were created, he brought both hands and the fire and electricity fused into one, with a blue and yellow color. It started as a ball but he continued making its form, turnig it into a hawk roughly the same size as an actual hawk. It was of a completely different nature to demons and would not be a victim of absorption due to the nature of its conception so he did not make a physical body for it.

"Done, it's not part of the matter attribute instead wholly conceptual so it has all the merits and not the demerits of the both fire and electricity. Now we just wait for it to wake up".

The hawk was not fire and electricity in a physical sense but the ideas of the two and that made it so it can burn even without material to burn making it exhaustless among other things. Nero looked at the fire and electricity hawk in Noir's hands and was reminded of himself. Turns out he really was just a product of Noir testing magic on the nature of sentients.

"So what's next, a species name. Electricity fire hawk and electric fire hawk are correct but lightning fire hawk sounds right. And do you plan to keep it around".

"No, I'll just give it a task and it'll go away".

Nero did not even ask how that made sense choosing to keep to himself at the moment. Noir placed the hawk on a table and focused on how the battle was going. The four were dominating the battlefield not even a single injury sustained, something that made the very basis of this war flawed.

(What's the point of the war when there's this much of difference in power, the knights are like statues out there).

  Stolen novel; please report.

It wasn't that the imperial army was weak, they were in fact all individually comparable to his pre awakened self. What he was witnessing was the difference of his selves before being a noble, the strength part he already knew but the huge difference in speed was something he did not expect. Turns out even though nobles had more mana it didn't help with their speed and as a result were not superior in this area. While watching the hawk was starting to wake up.

"You, are you the one who managed to wake me up".

It said pointing at Noir with its fiery wing.

  "Yes I am".

He replied while turning back to look at it.

"I will grant you one wish before I resume my quest of finding out who I am. You see I don't even remember my name".

It sounded regretfully with a sense of longing, if he was not mistaken Nero was sure it gave off the presence of an elder.

"If you don't remember, why don't you go by lightning fire hawk till you remember your old name".

The hawk thought for a while before agreeing to it.

"Thank you for the name cat friend. Young one tell me your wish".

Noir pointed in the direction of the battlefield and said.

"I want you to eliminate a quarter of the those soldiers".

"I'm not keen on the bullying of the weak however I will not question your wish and will grant it as promised. This is goodbye".

The hawk took to the skies heading towards the battlefield. Each flap of its wings leaving traces of sparks behind.

[Everyone you've done well, return to base]

He sent the message via telepathy to his subordinates. And the next moment they were back using teleportation, with their departure the hawk grew in size, that it covered most of the battlefield. The flapping of its wings sent down flames and lightning, the army was helpless against it when they attempted to fly to it or use their long range attacks, they'd be either struck by lightning or blocked by shield of fire. It didn't take long before it completed the wish and flew off in search of clues as to who it was.

"What exactly did you do to it?".

"It's easy to guess isn't it. I gave it false memories and a purpose".

The imperial army was now left with below half of its original forces but they didn't stop their advance. The thoughts of yesterday returned he decided on his next move, he would resurrect the dead knights. A glowing mist started to appear across the battlefield, covering the dead, their wounds healed and they became whole again but non came back to life.

"It seems I've failed and also discovered another high order law, which is the cause of my failure".

Having failed to bring them back to life he turned the dead knights into zombies. Their skin began to turn an ashley grey and they rose one by one and began to attack their former comrades.

"What would you have done if the resurrection was successful?".

"I'd kill them naturally. No, scratch that I'd control their minds and make them turn against their allies. Don't look at me like that, it's a war when you're weak your life and death is in the hands of the enemy".

Nero couldn't understand, why did Noir keep acting in such manner. He feared what would happen to him if he asked so he remained silent. In the end seeing as they die either way, no one argued against him and how could they call him cruel when they were responsible for the death of most of those knights.

"See that there's no reason for us to get involved. In fact the battlefield is now balanced unlike before, it's no longer one sided slaughter. But it seems I still have to step in".

The time for him to step in was drawing closer, the bishops had finally made their move. The staff that the two bishops held formed a sphere of light that continued to grow encompassing the entire battlefield in no time at all. All the zombies inside the field of light were stunned for a moment then continued to wreck havoc. Them only being stunned was a result of his magic being levels higher than the bishops otherwise they would be affected by the holy field and disintegrate.

"They have an interesting toy in their hands I'll go and check it out".

He said before making his way to them. He was walking to the bishops killing any knight that stood in his way. Moving to attack them every time they got in his way was a hustle, halfway to the bishops he formed a field of death. Now every knight that got within its range died instantly. Even as they died the remaining knights still tried to prevent him from reaching the bishops. Contrast to his death field the holy field was much larger but the fact that his remained effective within the holy field was proof of its superiority and it was only in the size he intended it to be.

"That staff your holding it's quite the handy work. You've been linking everyone's mana to yourselves and with a force this large you could unleash at least one attack that can inflict note worthy damage to the CDA graduates".

He said upon reaching the bishops and even though they were within his death field they remained alive thanks to him releasing them from its effects. The bishops were unfazed perhaps even ignoring him still focused on linking the mana of their allies. He waited till they were done, one bishop collapsed from exhaustion while the other was brimming with energy. He formed a sword of light and lunged forward aiming at Noir.

"Even when we die it's not the end. Our deaths will pave a way to victory for the hero".

"What ever makes you die in peace, Mr".

The bishop fell to the ground before he could reach him, he was dead. They were no longer free from the effects of the death field. He took the staff from the now dead bishop. He analysed it and it was just as he had analysed after seeing them take it out for use. It was an item that linked the mana of many sources into one place and the bishop acted as the medium for that mana. It was mana from over hundreds of thousands of individuals, the bishop could only handle it for a limited amount of time which meant it had to be activated mid battle. The amazing thing about it was that the mana wasn't additive but multiplative making it terrifying in the right hands. Even after the death of the bishops the holy field remained, everyone in the imperial army was inside it including the zombies. He seized it and turned it into death field. In truth he didn't do much, he just had to remove its holy and life attribute leaving the rest behind. Previously it was using the laws of life and death and the purification of the holy attribute, and the resulting effect was any undead creature would cease to exist within it and all living beings within it would remain alive unable to die and enter a state of immortality. But with its altered state both the zombies and the remaining imperial army died.

"It's a shame such a thing can't breach the gap between us and the apostles".

With everyone dead he cancelled the death field and returned to base. The staff was thrown away since it held value to him.
