Chapter 51: Pool Challenge

As people that were close by hear the conversation between Lee and the lifeguard, they start to get excited and pull out recording devices. As Lee gets to the top of the stairs standing at the ten-metre height, he looks down and locates the toy; then, with a deep breath, he feels his heart calm down, from the radio of the pool worker at the top, Lee hears the voice of the lifeguard calling for back-up; Lee hears someone approach, and as he looks to the side, he finds a lifeguard walking slowly.

Lee waves at him and says, “See you downstairs.” Then he runs and takes a dive; people around record him as he skydives straight into the pool, then when he resurfaces, he has the toy clasped in his hand.

Cheers and applause erupt around the pool. Lee swims to the lifeguard and hands him the pool toy. “Does this clear any doubts?” The guard just nods his head.

Lee then goes to the slides and just swims casually; around one, they exit to a grass side with tables to have a picnic. All of the adults in the family, with the exception of Lee’s mum and dad, still look at Lee like at any time he could sprout another head or pair of wings. At first, they didn’t pay too much attention; they were proud that he saved a girl, but it was nothing special, but that changed after they found out that until that morning, he had never swum without arm floats.

After lunch, Lee lays down under a tree in a shadow, but it is not comfortable; so, as he opens his eyes, he has an idea. With a quick sprint, he climbs the tree and sits on the branch and leans back against the tree trunk; soon he is asleep.

When he wakes up again, he notices that two hours have gone by. So he just jumps down from the tree and scares a group of teenagers that hadn't noticed that Lee was on top of the tree.

Lee approaches his mum, yawning and stretching. “Is it safe for me to go back in the water?” Lee asks, and Sue looks up at him.

“Sure, son,” Sue says and points at the pool. “Saki is already there with your dad.”

Lee removes his T-shirt and drops it by Sue, then dives into the pool. As he is swimming, he notices that there is more splashing than before, followed by laughter; once in a while, there are gasps and cheers.

“What is going on, dad?” Lee asks, getting near Kenji.

Kenji looks at Lee and says, “It’s your fault.” Then, noticing Lee’s confused expression, he adds, “It’s because of the jump you made to catch the toy; you set a challenge and now everyone is trying to do the same.”

“But hardly anyone can do it,” says Lee’s uncle. “I was intrigued and tried myself, and only at the third attempt did I manage to do it.”

“Really?” Lee asks, and both Kenji and Takeshi nod. “The trick is to keep your body straight and go right down and not sideways.” Lee then looks at the people jumping and says, “He is going to fail.” As the man comes out of the water empty-handed, people boo him; then looking up again, Lee says, “She will get to the bottom, but I think that she is too far off.” As the girl gets out of the water, she has a green toy and people laugh; she then drops it again in the water.

Noticing Lee’s face, Kenji says, “There are three toys down there.” “So far, people only got one at a time.” Kenji stops talking as he notices the look in his son's eyes. “I don't like that look,” says Kenji, looking at his brother.

“Why not? What is so wrong with…” Takeshi starts to say, then stops and looks around. “Where did Lee go?”

Kenji sighs, then without turning around says, “If I know him, he's already at the stairs.” Takeshi looks at the stairs just in time to see Lee reaching them.

“Hey, kid, don't you think you are in the wrong place?” a man says behind Lee. As he looks at the man, this one points to the slides. “The slides are down there; this is the line for the challenge.”

Lee nods. “I know; so if you are afraid to jump, you can go there.”

“How dare you, kid?” the man says, turning red. “Just so you know, I have jumped seven times and managed to get one of the batons; one time I nearly got two.”

“Big deal,” Lee says with a shrug.

Before the man can rebut anything else, the lifeguard smiles at Lee. “Hello, do you think you can get all three?”

Lee looks over the edge of the ramp and does a quick calculation. “I think so!” He then passes the lifeguard.

The man that was behind Lee scoffs. “You say you can get all three, and yet you are not over any of them.”

As people by the pool see that it is Lee, a toddler, about to jump, murmurs erupt, but then some people who have been there from early in the morning exclaim and pull out their phones or anything that can record.

Above the pool, Lee blocks all the sound, takes a deep breath, and braces himself; then he takes two steps forward in a run and dives into the pool, his body going straight down but diagonal towards the batons. Around the pool, everyone holds their breath; then Lee breaks out of the water, away from where everyone is looking. The first thing they notice is the baton in Lee’s mouth; then he lifts his hands, showing a baton in each of them.

He swims to shore and gets out; only then does an explosion of cheers erupt, causing anyone that wasn't paying attention to look. Lee approaches the lifeguard. “Did anyone lose their watch?” Lee asks, showing his wrist and removing the watch from it. “It was down there too, so I just brought it out.”

“Thank you,” the lifeguard says. “In fact, someone did lose their watch; we were going to get it after emptying the pool.”

“How did you do that, kid?” Takeshi asks, approaching Lee. “Not only did you get all the batons, but you got your cousin's watch too.”

Lee smiles at his uncle. “It’s all in the angle,” Lee says and looks up at the people waiting to jump. “If you go straight, you can only get one before your body starts to get back up, so if you go diagonal and get the one at the lowest part, then continue straight and get the others as the body goes back to the top.”

“Makes sense,” says Takeshi with a nod. “Let’s go; I think this was enough adventure for one day. Your parents want to go back home.” He then gets the watch of his son from the lifeguard, and Lee walks with him back to the group of their family.
