Chapter 3 - First Step

Kai and the beast sat next to the half-eaten snake, the jungle quiet around them. He glanced at the creature beside him, sleek, powerful, and still. It could have left after healing, after eating. But it didn’t. It had chosen to stay.

  That meant something.

“Since you want to keep me company,” Kai said, wiping sweat from his brow, “I need to give you a name then.”

He looked at the black, two-meter-long Tigerhawk. Its feathers shimmered faintly in the fading light, and its feline body was coiled with quiet strength.

“I’ll call you… Umbra,” he said softly. “You are female, right? And you look like a shadow, and you’ve got that whole mysterious guardian vibe going on.”

The beast blinked slowly, as if acknowledging the name. Then it let out a low, rumbling sound, somewhere between a purr and a growl, and settled beside him.

  Kai smiled. “Umbra it is.”

The sun was already past the middle of the horizon, casting long shadows across the jungle floor. They couldn’t stay exposed much longer. Shelter was a necessity.

Kai turned to Umbra. “Do you have any place you can hide or sleep?” he asked, hoping the beast would understand.

Umbra looked at him for a moment, then grabbed the snake carcass with her beak and began walking north. Kai quickly gathered the water containers and his bone weapon, following close behind. He hoped she had understood his question and that she was leading him somewhere safe.

After nearly an hour of trekking through thick foliage, they arrived at a massive tree, its trunk as wide as a building. Beneath one of its sprawling roots was a cavern, hidden and deep, large enough to house a small family. Inside, Kai saw a patch of dry grass arranged like a nest and a scattering of old bones, remnants of past meals.

He understood immediately. This was Umbra’s lair. And she was inviting him in.

She tossed the snake toward him, then turned back to the carcass and tore something from its chest, a small, glowing blue gem. It was perfectly round, about the size of a thumb, and pulsed with a soft, soothing blue light. Umbra walked over and gently placed it in Kai’s hand.

Kai stared at it, unsure. “What should I do with this?” he asked.

Umbra took another bite of the snake and swallowed, then looked at him expectantly.

“You want me to eat it?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. The gem didn’t feel dangerous; on the contrary, it radiated calm. He thought about it for a moment, then replied, “If you think it’s a good idea to eat this, then I’ll try it. Let’s see what happens.”

He paused. “But first, let me prepare the healing water. Just in case.”

Holding the water container in one hand, Kai swallowed the gem.

  At first, nothing happened.

Then, slowly, warmth began to spread through his chest. Soothing waves of energy radiated outward, filling his limbs, clearing his mind. The longer it settled, the more power it seemed to release, until it enveloped his entire body.

His thoughts began to blur. His muscles relaxed. His vision dimmed.

  And then, he collapsed.

Umbra watched him fall, then quietly coiled her body around him, protective and still. She would guard him through whatever came next.

  ***

While he slept, Kai felt his body changing. Blue energy surged through his muscles and arteries, strengthening them. As his body was reborn, he dreamt of a deep lake.

In the dream, he broke free from an egg and swam through the depths. Years passed. He grew stronger, feeding on fish and smaller lake creatures. Eventually, he became massive, so strong that even others of his kind couldn’t challenge him.

He left his home lake and wandered through the jungle, battling beasts of all kinds. One day, he discovered a mysterious lake that empowered him further. He claimed it as his territory.

Over countless years, he defended it, fought challengers, and finally developed a core. He knew instinctively that once the core matured, he could evolve.

But just days later, a monster appeared, unlike anything he had ever seen. He felt no fear. This would be just another victory.

He struck first. Victory was within reach.

  And then, he died.

  “Aaaaaaaaah!”

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

Kai woke up screaming. The pain of death had felt too real.

He sat in a daze, breathing heavily. Slowly, realization dawned.

He had lived the life of the lake serpent.

He had been the snake, fought countless battles, ruled as the strongest, evolved a core... and died.

  “What a life,” he whispered.

The snake was so strong. But in the end, it died to me. I need to be careful in this world. I need to get stronger. And I need to learn about this world.

He now understood what the blue gem was: a crystallization of world energy, formed after a beast had survived countless life-and-death battles. He wasn’t sure if this applied to all creatures, but it had happened to the serpent.

Kai stood up and examined himself.

He could still feel the gem in his plexus region, calm now, no longer radiating energy. But his body had changed. He was taller now, much taller than before. It seems I've grown quite a bit, actually, maybe ten or so centimeters. I should be around 180 now. He never really cared about height, but it wasn't bad to be taller.

His skin was rejuvenated and more durable. Power surged through his muscles. He had never felt better.

His mind was clearer, more peaceful. Living a second life through the serpent’s memories had expanded his understanding of the world.

And what was even more astonishing, where the gem now resided, there was a void. A hollow space, like a pocket of another dimension woven into his very being.

Umbra stood beside him, her gaze proud and satisfied.

Kai looked at Umbra and grinned. For the first time since arriving in this strange world, he felt like he was at the starting line, not just surviving, but ready to move forward. He wasn’t just a regular human anymore. He felt like something more.

“Thank you, Umbra,” he said softly. “For showing me the way.”

He knew he needed to test the limits of his new strength, to understand just how much he had changed.

Stepping out of the cavern and into the filtered light beneath the massive tree canopy, he scanned the area.

“Let’s start with strength,” he muttered.

He approached one of the thicker nearby trees and threw a punch. His fist tore clean through the trunk, leaving a perfect hole.

“Whoa,” he laughed, eyes wide with amusement. “That was effortless.”

Next, he crouched into a sprinter’s stance. Let’s test my speed. I’ll run to the hill from before and back.

In a flash, he launched forward. Within seconds, he was already a few dozen meters away. As he ran, he felt the wind against his skin and something else. A subtle awareness of the life around him. It was as if he could sense the presence of nearby creatures, their energy brushing against his own.

His core spun slowly, releasing a faint mist that fed his body, fueling his movement.

Twenty minutes later, he returned to the cavern, breathing steadily. It had taken them an hour to reach the cavern before. Now, he’d done the round trip in less than half that time.

  He felt like a superhero.

Kai sat beside Umbra, who was still feasting on the serpent’s flesh.

“Hey, Umbra,” he said, catching his breath. “How about we go hunting later?”

It was a bold suggestion, one he wouldn’t have dared to make before. He used to avoid confrontation, let others make decisions for him. He’d lived quietly, afraid to stand out.

But now? Now he felt awake. Alive. Like he’d finally found his true self.

Was it the power? The serpent’s memories? Maybe both. He wasn’t sure. But he liked this new Kai.

  Then the realization hit him.

Hunting? When did I become a predator?

Just days ago, he’d been playing games, wasting time, drifting.

Now, with a taste of power, he wanted to hunt. To test himself. To prove something.

But even Umbra could beat him up if she wanted.

He hadn’t yet grasped how deeply the serpent’s memories had affected him.

He thought he was that serpentine predator.

But he wasn’t. Not even close.

Umbra growled softly and continued eating. Though her wounds had healed, something in her energy felt... broken. She was recovering physically, but mentally, she was still shaken.

Kai could sense it now; her energy was dark, cold, and powerful. Far stronger than the serpent’s had been. Which made him wonder: what had she fought that left her in such a state?

He understood, then, that even with his newfound strength, he was far from safe.

There were still monsters in this world, stronger than he could ever imagine.

But at least he had a goal now.

He would grow stronger, strong enough that no one could threaten him. Strong enough that no one could ever control his life again.

  He had a shot.

As Kai sat quietly, he could feel the core within him spinning, drawing in energy from the world around him. It moved on its own, steady and rhythmic, requiring no conscious effort. But as he focused on it, a memory surfaced. Not a memory he had lived, but something deeper, an instinct, a piece of inherited knowledge.

He began to guide the energy released from the core through his body. New pathways had formed; ethereal channels layered just above his arteries. The energy, a white-blue mist, flowed like a river through them. As it moved, it cleansed and strengthened his body, refining it with each cycle.

With every pass, the energy’s effect became subtler, but it was reshaping him. His body’s rhythm changed. He felt colder, more precise, deadlier. Like a serpent.

Curious, he tried to push more energy through the channels, but they resisted. Pain flared, sharp and immediate. He stopped. This was his limit, for now.

Turning his attention to Umbra, he reached out with his new senses. She didn’t resist. She let him in.

Her energy was different, wild, feral, fast. It surged through her like a storm barely contained. Her core was larger than his, and its color was different too, deeper, darker, and more ancient.

“So mysterious,” Kai murmured. “If only I could learn more about all this…”

It was becoming clear: different creatures had different cores, different ways of channeling energy, and vastly different strengths.

“So interesting,” he whispered, eyes wide with wonder.

As he sat in quiet reflection, something shifted in his awareness. He turned his attention inward again, sensing a strange change.

His blood vessels were now black, tinged with a faint green hue. Even his blood had darkened slightly. He wasn’t sure if this was a good sign or a warning. But he had survived the serpent’s venom in the lake. Maybe the battle between poison and healing water had strengthened his arteries.

“Let’s hope this was a good thing,” he muttered. Another mystery I don’t understand.

  He sighed, then straightened.

“I need to learn more,” he said, voice firm with resolve.

His gaze drifted toward the hill. Maybe now, with his enhanced body and senses, he could uncover something new.

“Umbra, you stay and rest. I’m going for a walk,” he said.

She didn’t respond with words, but she understood. Ever since Kai had saved her, a connection had formed between them, something deeper than language. A bond between souls.

Kai didn’t know it yet, but Umbra had allowed that connection to take root. She trusted him.
