Chapter 9: Unexpected victory.

Devan’s legs shake as he continues running; he limped and limped.

  Aisha looks over.

  “Devan what’s wrong?!”

  “I’m not sure...”

Devan limps and limps then he falls... however he bounces.

  Neveil looks up.

  Devan smirks.

  “Finally!!”

He tilts downwards and bounces, then tilts and smashed against the tree. He repeats this over and over again, resulting in him traveling at Mach 1 and smashing through the creature.

  The creature screams…

  Aisha looks back at it.

  ***

Melissa was stretching out on the bed; Mac was up stretching.

  Melissa panted

  “That was good.”

  Mac sighed.

  “Agreed.”

Melissa wrote out more in the notebook.

You see, as a writer Melissa liked to act out things in person to really capture them, however she found it embarrassing so she avoided doing it in front of other people, what else did you think they were doing you pervs?

Melissa stands and walks to her bag to grab a book, however when she does, a book she had never seen before was on top, it was old and dirty.

“Uhh… Mac did you buy a new book?”

  Mac looks over.

“No, I only read digitally remember.”

“Oh ok, well maybe one of the others put it in the wrong bag.”

Melissa picks it up and inspects it, now that she held it; it was about as thick as a dictionary. Melissa opened it and it automatically flipped the pages to something called

  “Uhhh.”

As she read through it, it revealed tiers to her power; the first one and her current one read , the ability to cause basic phenomena; the rest were covered in foggy ink.

  “I see…”

After this it flipped again and one it got to the center; the center page split, and the book glowed blue.

Mac grows concerned, and he runs over but just as he does, a tail pops out and swipes him away, Melissa is then enclosed in a barrier.

  “Mac!!”

Just as the barrier fogs up, she heard nothing.

The page glowed slightly brighter blue than the book; it was a letter from Mr. Oliver.

The book was far older than Melissa, yet the pages were brand new.

Dear Melissa, this book will tell you about how to advance in this world, and much about your powers, I must be honest I believe in you however if you stay the way you are now you’ll never amount to Isabella or me, let alone Alexander Henry… regardless we believe in you, once you reach rank 4 be very careful… <^?^> and <^#^> have been watching you… look to the { ~~~ } and { ^/\/^ } they’ll tell you which of the two is near… one is Evanescent the other the stronger one is… perennial…

  Mr. Oliver

  Melissa starts shaking…

Just as lighting crackles… or at least Melissa thought it did…

The book flips once again, and a white box spreads across the paper, and then shapes itself into words.

“Bela provo, vi senvalora, ?u vi pensis, ke vi lernos mian nomon?”

It then slams shut it falls back into the bag; the barrier fell, and Melissa immediately ran over to Mac.

  “You, ok?”

  Mac rubbed his back.

“Yeah mostly, just a little sore.”

She hugs him and rubs his back.

In the embrace, they hear ruffling.

They look over to see the bunny Chris summoned earlier.

Melissa releases the hug and stands.

  “I— “

As she tries to speak, the bunny hops over to the door and jumps to the handle.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

Melissa immediately understands and runs over to open doors.

The bunny quickly hops out to the forest.

He hops and hops, jumping above branches, as the twigs crack under his feet, and the moon shines down upon him.

  ***

Devan bounces around, eventually shooting through the monster.

  Devan bounces to a branch.

Devan pulls out his gun, but this time it glows.

As he pulled the trigger, the bullet followed immediately however; it hit a tree, but instead of splintering, it bounced and smashed into the creature ricocheting inside of it many times over as the creature screamed out.

Chris pulls his face for something useful, but instead of a rabbit a multitude of scarves came, each knotted to each other with varying colors.

Chris throws it and restricts the beast.

  “Run!”

The group starts running; Devan bounces close behind.

They keep running and running and eventually arrive near a big tree which they hide behind.

The group looks to the blonde kid.

Aisha was the first to speak.

  “Who are you.”

The kid rubs the back of his neck.

  “I’m Jason.”

“What are you doing out here Jason?”

  “Well, I… I’m the Zeltic Slasher….”

  The group focuses on him.

  Jason throws his hands up.

“But not the real thing I’ve been dressing up as it to scare people… until that thing appeared tonight...”

  Neveil nods.

“Yeah, he tried to scare us, and that thing showed up behind him.”

  Chris rubs his temple.

“Well, it’s probably no Yokai, and likely not a spirit, so it had to appear randomly.”

  Devan tilts his head.

“But nothing truly happens at random.”

“Yes, I know… however it can’t be something like ‘the fear of it brings it into being’ or it would have appeared way earlier.”

  Jason nods.

  “Yeah I’m 17 I’ve been doing this since I was 10.”

  Chris snaps his fingers.

“See that, it has to be maybe the place itself.”

  Neveil leans in.

  “Elaborate.”

“Well, it’s likely instead of the typical fear you read in stories, the location itself holds onto memories and energy itself to create these things maybe it’s just the way the world works.”

  Devan nods.

“That’s not a half bad theory but we can’t confirm anything.”

  Aisha claps.

“Look interesting theory however we should be focusing on bigger things.”

  The group agrees.

  Jason stands.

  “I’m sorry for the trouble…”

  Devan chuckles.

“Well due to someone this is kinda our job now, so it’s a good thing we stopped here.”

  They hear rapid footsteps approaching.

  Devan ready’s up.

  “Alright it’s coming!”

It appears to be walking in front of them; they now have a clearer view than ever.

It was a tall lanky creature, grey rotting skin, with a hunched back. It had a broken mask on its face, and bones stuck out from every limb.

  Devan grins.

“I thought it felt a little weird.”

As it approaches, they hear branches cracking in the distance.

  Devan looks over.

However, when the source of the sound came to the moonlight, it was… a bunny.

  Chris grinned.

“So, he didn't un-summon!! He’s here to help!”

The bunny jumped up and kicked the creature. It quickly tried to retaliate, but the bunny jumped to its armed then kicked its face once again.

Devan aimed his gun carefully and fired this time straight into the creature the bullet ricocheted through its body once again and it screamed just as the bunny kicked it, causing it to stumble backwards.

The bunny jumps over to Devan.

Devan nods his head, and throws the bunny hard into the ground, and it bounces, reaching Mach 1, traveling through the monster a multitude of times, then back flipping into a tree, jumping back down to smash the creature into the ground.

  Neveil frowns.

Neveil reaches his hands up above the air, slamming them down, as a multitude of brick slabs travel down, crushing the creature underneath.

The group breathed a sigh of relief.

The bunny hops back over to Chris and jumps into his eye.

  The battle was long over.

  ***

Melissa is pacing through the camper van.

“I don’t know Mac… are you sure we shouldn’t go… what if they're in trouble.”

Mac speaks in a hushed tone.

“Hey hey, look even if we happen to go you don’t have full grasp of your powers, you’ll just be an extra ant to squash if it’s like that skeleton again.”

  Melissa sighs.

  “You’re right.”

Melissa sits next to him on the bed and leans on him.

Just as she relaxes, the door opens and she shoots up.

The group walks through the door, battered.

  Despite that, Melissa hugs them.

  “I was so worried!!”

  Devan mutters.

“You we’re so worried but you ain’t show up…”

  Melissa scoffs.

“In my defense I was wondering rather I should.”

  Mac nods.

  “I second that.”

  Jason enters.

  Melissa tilts her head.

  “Uhh… who’s that.”

  Neveil’s sighs.

  “Long story.”

They fill her and Mac in.

  Melissa sighs.

  “Glad you guys are ok…”

Melissa looks over to her bag.

“However, I have something I need to show you guys.”

Melissa walks over to her bag and pulls out the book.

  “Come.”

  Everyone comes to her.

“Now place your hands on the book.”

They do so, and the book opens…

  The barrier from earlier opens.

  Melissa nods.

“I think this barrier isn’t just to protect from physical threats but spirituality as well which is why I think it can tell us more than Mr. Oliver could tell.”

  Everyone nodded.

The books page splits open and it reads…

at the top of the page.

  The group nodded.

  The page flips once more.

Jason slightly shifts and bumps into Melissa.

  “Sorry.”

  “It’s fine.”

The book rattles and reads them one more thing.

The book shuts and slams into the bag, this time zipping itself shut.

  The barrier shuts down.

  As they look around.

  Jason rubs his neck.

  “Well I’m gonna head out.”

  Aisha looks to him.

“You sure? I mean we could drop you off.”

  Jason walks to the door.

  “No I’m fine.”

  As he walks out.

Everyone stayed silent for a second.

  Devan clasped his fist.

“Well, it’s nice to know our current level, it didn’t mention how to advance though.”

  Melissa looks at him.

“It’s probably because it couldn’t the barrier does protect us, but maybe there is a limit to who it can protect us from.”

  Chris nodded.

  “Makes sense.”

  Melissa continues.

“We’ll have to ask it more careful questions, so it won’t malfunction again.”

Melissa fills them in on earlier events.

  They all think carefully.

  Mac breaks the silence.

“Well…. I always knew Mr. Oliver gave off a menacing aura.”

They continue to chatter away, until eventually they all lay down not advancing towards Zeltic.

  ***

It’s the dawn of the next day; Melissa is the first to wake up.

She sits up and walks over to her bag, grabbing a letter and envelope. Lastly, she grabs a pen and begins to write.

Dear Mr. Oliver…

  Melissa
