Chapter 2: Achieving Goals

Time really flies by as a baby, I mean all I do is nap, eat and of course the occasional attempt at crawling. Over these past couple months my mother and Amelia have been the main caretakers, though my father does see me when he has the chance. I even overheard my mom complaining that he bragged to everyone who could stand his voice about my birth.

Though today was the day, It might not seem big to most but it’s been my goal for the past months. The ability to walk. So far the best I’ve gotten was standing for a couple seconds but when I tried lifting that first step I fell straight into the floor which luckily seemed to be cushioned in my room. Though my failure saddened me, my mother was anything but. The happiness from her scream as I stood for the first time washed away any embarrassment and cries before they even took effect.

So now with the help of a nearby chair I lift myself off the ground and stood. Holding that for a second and under my mother's cautious gaze, whose name I've confirmed is Vilenna. I lifted my foot and took a step. She reached out with her arms, her smile and excitement coming off of her in waves but making sure to make no sound in fear of it causing me to fall. I once again take a step, and another, and another, until finally I reach her.

“Amelia, he did it!” She yelled for the other woman in excitement.

Not even ten seconds later Amelia appeared in the doorway gasping for breath.

“Vilenna you only call me after he did,” Amelia scolded, pouting. "Who knows when he'll do it again."

Knowing that if Amelia didn’t see me walk soon she wouldn't leave me alone, I decided despite my exhaustion from such a monumental task, I’ll do it again. Already elevated due to my mother hugging me I slowly escaped her grasp and stood tall for this daunting task once again.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

Excitement appeared on Amelia’s face as she rushed to the opposite side of the room and faced my direction with her arms out like my mother had been. Taking a breath I brought my leg up then out and finally down again, this time I was faster and right before I reached Amelia my damn baby legs gave up on me.

The ground approached me fast but before I could drop more than a few inches the air around me somehow became denser like I was wrapped in a tight blanket. I closed my eyes thinking it was just an illusion but imagine my surprise when I felt a soft, warm feeling and not the hard embrace of the ground. Slowly I opened my eyes to discovered I was floating a couple inches off the ground with almost see through air holding me.

Is this what I think it is? Please let it be true! MAGIC! Just as I made that realization the air carried me over into my mothers waiting arms who laughed seeing my wide eyed expression.

“That, Casius, is my element, Air.”

“I wonder what element the boy will awaken? Imagine if he’s one of the lucky ones with two!” Amelia thought out loud.

“Don’t get my hopes up with two elements Amelia, you know how rare that is. Besides, we’ll just have to wait for the ceremony once he’s twelve to find out.”

Core? Is that how I get magic? Also what's this about a ceremony? Dozens of questions fill my mind that sadly can’t be answered

“Fine.” She turns to me with a hopeful look in her eyes, stands up and leaves the room.

“Casius, this world is dangerous, just make sure you live long for me.”

I can feel her deep care for me just by looking into her deep emerald eyes. I make a mental promise to never let her lose her warmth when I grow older.
