Chapter 5 - Arcanite Bonding

"There are 8 planets, we occupy 5 of them. Four are green, 1 is orange, 2 are red and 1 black." Russel keeps reciting the important facts for the intelligence test as he walks to the classroom.

On his way there Lex walks out of his room at the same time. "Oh hey Lex! Did you sleep wel? Russel asks.

Lex looks at him with his eyes half closes and gives him a mean look. "I have troubles with mornings man, usually i always sleep in".

"Did not expect that from Lex" Russel muses to himself. "I thought that he would be super energetic always but no one is immune to mornings it seems.".

Together they walk towards the classroom and take a seat as everyone gets in. Russel notices a lot of tired recruits with bags under their eyes. It is very understandable since it was so much information they had to learn in such a short time. Russel likes it however since he does not like being in the unknown and has a thirst for knowledge. One could categorize him as a "Teachers Pet".

Corporal Heicken walks in with a holographic tablet in her hands. She looks well rested unlike the students in her blue uniform from the IGA with her rank displayed on her shoulder with 2 stripes. Signifying her Corporal rank.

"Alright recruits." Russel finds her voice sound way more serious than yesterday as he sits more up right and interlocks his fingers under his chin. The only time Russel could be seen as serious as now is when someone touches his pizza. Absolutely no one touches his pizza.

"Its time for the final intelligence test. I hope you all studied well. But don't fret about the test, because it contains only one question." She says. Everyone looks surprised as they fought they would be grilled with a 3 hour long test.

Russel as well did not see this coming. He narrows his eyes and is absolutely focused as she slides on her tablet as the question comes on the screen.

"You are on a mission to kill a Trigor, when you get to the location the Trigor has a hostage. It's a civilian. You see that the Trigor is hurt and you can finish it off. However doing so would kill the civilian as well. What would you do?"

Russel frowns at this question as he did not expect this at all. "Then why were we studying the whole day yesterday?!" he thinks to himself. First of all Russel thinks he lacks a lot of circumstantial information.

However his eyes quickly widen as he realizes what they want to know. He types down his answer and submits it pretty quickly, satisfied with it. As he looks up he sees that Lex and Manu have already finished typing their answers as well. Lex gives him a cheeky thumbs up and Manu has a very stoic face. To his surprise he also sees a girl playing with her long red hair who already finished.

He looks at her name on her vest and sees "Reya Natura". Contrary to her red hair he sees she has bright green eyes. He frowns at this since its an unusual combination. She looks very bored out of the big window into space.

Russel also looks out the window and really appreciates the view for the first time. He sees Earth and nothingness. It gives him a calming feeling. The voice of Corporal Heicken drags him out of his daydreaming.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

"Everybody finished, good job." She looks at her tablet. "Russel Darington" Russel immediately stands up and gives the IGA salute. "Pass, follow the employees to bond with your Trigger"

Russels jaw almost drops. "I made it! I really made it! I can finally get my Trigger!. Two masked employees signal him to come, while Russel walks past Lex he sees a big grin on Lex's face. Russels legs are shaking as he follows the IGA employees through the giant space ship. He really wonders how big it is since he didn't see any part when he was looking out the window just now.

"In here recruit" One of the masked employees points to a door. Russel looks at the door and takes a deep breath. Then he opens the door.

The first thing he notices is how immaculate clean it is. The space ship was not dirty at all but even thinking about the word dirty in here seems to do this room injustice. He sees a tall man with no hair and a long white beard typing on a tablet.

"Russel Darington is it? I see, interesting answer on your question" The man says with a smile. "My name is Doctor Pfeifen and I will assist in your bonding process with your first Trigger". Russel gives the man a quick salute.

The doctor chuckles at this gesture. "Boy put your hand down, I have no military authority and am but a simple doctor". The doctor looks over to the door. "Close it please"

Russel immediately listens as his heart starts racing. He wanted to reply to the doctor but is simply too nervous. He can finally get his Trigger!

"When you go in there Russel you need to make sure to be in a calm state of mind and envision what you want. Or you can envision what you are going to use it for." The doctor says. "After its done I will help you get used to your new body with some tests."

Russel nods. "Are you mute boy?" The doctor asks with a friendly smile. Russel shakes his head.

"Alright must be the nerves, you can go inside when you are ready"

Russel closes his eyes and focuses on his breathing. His dad taught him this after he started having some panic attacks from the Trigor attack.

Then he steps in the room. The room is so white and clean that he can see himself everywhere. As he looks back on the glass window he notices that he does not see it anymore. It appeared to be an one way mirror.

Then his eyes go to the small white table which is as high as his waist. It has an opaque cover. "When you give me a thumbs up i will seal the room and remove the cover and the bonding process starts, after that there is no way back." Russel hers the doctors voice.

Russel does not hesitate at all and puts a thumbs up.

He hears the door seal and the opaque cover shatters into nothingness. Then Russel sees it.

A blue weird oval shaped rock. It has bumps everywhere and is not smooth at all but Russel feels like its perfect. It slowly pulses blue light as it seems to call out to him.

He slowly walks over to it, totally entranced and has an amazed look on his face. Then he picks up the stone as it starts to glow. Russel immediately starts to think about the AK-47 Trigger his dad has. He wants something that powerful as well! In the back of his head he has the handgun like Trigger. Then as his final choice he envisions the dagger since it also seems powerful.

His heartbeat has never been this high in his whole life. This is what he has been training for. This is what he wants. What will he get?!

Then light starts shining and covers the entire room in a light blue hue. Russel cant see anything and he does not feel the stone anymore. Huh?!

Then the light goes away and Russel looks in his eyes and starts looking around but he sees nothing. He hears the door unseal as he asks. "Huh, where is my Trigger?!" Russel falls to his knees as he starts to panic.

Doctor Pfeifen walks in and gives him a pat on the back. "It seems like you are one of the unlucky ones boy. But don't fret you still have a chance at a decent career"

Russels eyes widen as he remembers something his brother told him. Someone in his class had a very weird Trigger. He did not have one at all and could only use the basic abilities.

Russel sees the walls come at him and everything goes black. He is doomed....
