Chapter 23: Farewells

I woke to gentle knocking at the door. I already knew who it was.

  "Come in."

Clemearl entered, dressed formally this time, hair pulled back in an elaborate braid, posture impeccable. But there was something different in her eyes. Warmth. Kindness.

  "Good morning, Sekire."

  "Good morning, Lady Clemearl."

  "May we talk?"

  My heart raced.

  "Yes, of course."

She sat in the chair near the bed. I sat up straight, trying to look composed.

  Silence for a moment.

"I've completed my evaluation," she began.

  "Yes."

  "And I've reached a decision."

  I took a deep breath.

  "Yes."

"House Netherheart officially accepts you as a ward."

  The world stopped.

  "I-I..."

"You will live at Netherheart Mansion with me, with my sister Lizbeth, and with the children, Delta and Esther," she continued, voice gentle. "You will receive appropriate education, advanced magical training, and will be considered a member of the family."

Tears began to fall. I couldn't stop them.

  "You... accepted me?"

  "Yes."

"Even with all the... I'm not perfect, I have problems, I don't know half the things I should—"

"Sekire," she interrupted me, gentle but firm. "No one is perfect, and I don't expect you to be. I only expect you to be you—honest, hardworking, kind."

"And you are all of those things."

She stood, approached, placed a hand on my shoulder.

  "Welcome to the family, Sekire."

And I couldn't hold back anymore. I hugged her. Without thinking, without protocol, I just hugged her.

And she returned it. Gentle, maternal, secure.

"Thank you," I whispered. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

  "You're welcome, dear."

We stayed like that for a moment, until I finally calmed down.

"When do we leave?" I asked, wiping the tears.

"In three days. I need to resolve some things first—final diplomatic matters with Caliope and Harven."

  "I understand."

"Use this time to say goodbye properly. I know you've made friends here."

Fuyumi, Hinata, Mabel. Yes, I had friends. Real friends.

  "I will."

"Good." She turned to leave, stopped at the door. "Oh, and Sekire?"

  "Yes?"

"I'm looking forward to having you with us."

And she left. Leaving me alone. With a future finally certain. Finally real.

Clemearl had returned to Starlight Grove that morning. She needed to prepare things at the mansion, organize a room, inform the family. She would return on the twentieth day to pick me up.

Two days. I had two days to say goodbye.

I started packing my things. There wasn't much.

Some clothes Caliope had provided, the book about identity, the glass butterfly, the wooden dragon Ferme had bought for Mabel and she'd given to me.

Everything fit in a small backpack. My entire life in a backpack.

But it was more than I'd had when I arrived. Much more.

Because now I had memories too. Good memories.

Of training with Caliope, of laughter with Fuyumi and Hinata, of deep conversations with Mabel. Of being seen, of mattering, of having a place.

I packed everything carefully. And then I went to find my friends.

All three were there, as if they knew I would come. Mabel, Fuyumi, Hinata. Sitting under a large tree, waiting.

"Hi," I said, voice trembling slightly.

  "Hi," they answered together.

I sat with them, forming a small circle. Silence for a moment.

  "So it's official?" Fuyumi asked.

  "Yes. Clemearl accepted me."

"I KNEW IT!" Mabel exploded. "I KNEW IT WOULD WORK OUT!"

"Congratulations," Hinata smiled, genuine. "You deserve it."

  "Thank you."

More silence. But heavy now. Because we all knew what this meant.

"I'm going to miss you," I said, voice breaking.

  "Me too," Fuyumi admitted.

"Who's going to make me laugh during training now?" Hinata tried to joke, but her eyes were glistening.

"You can visit," I said, desperate. "Clemearl said you'd be welcome, and I can come back too, during academy breaks, or—"

"Sekire," Mabel took my hand. "Stop."

  "But—"

"It won't be the same. We know that," she squeezed my hand. "But it's okay."

  "How is it okay?"

"Because you're going to a place where you can grow, where you can be more than a survivor," Fuyumi took my other hand.

"Where you can discover who you want to be," Hinata placed a hand on my shoulder.

"And we won't stop being your friends just because you're far away," Mabel continued.

"Friendship doesn't work like that," Fuyumi agreed.

"Distance doesn't change anything," Hinata finished.

And then I was crying. We all were. Hugging in a disorganized pile, laughing and crying at the same time.

"You're the best," I managed to say.

"We know," Mabel laughed through tears.

  "And so are you," Fuyumi.

"Don't forget us when you get famous," Hinata joked.

  "Never."

  "Promise?"

  "Promise."

We stayed like that for a long time. Just four girls, enjoying last moments together. Knowing things would change, but hoping the connection would remain.

Caliope and Harven had asked to see me before I left. Official, formal, but personal too.

I was nervous, dressed appropriately, trying to remember everything Fuyumi had taught me about etiquette.

I entered the room—vast, impressive. They were on their thrones, but descended when they saw me.

I bowed, as I'd learned, waiting.

"Sekire Dawnveil," Caliope began, voice formal but warm. "You came to us as a refugee, frightened, traumatized."

"And now you leave as a ward of one of the most respected houses on the continent."

  "This is a significant achievement."

  "Thank you, Your Majesty."

  Harven stepped forward.

"You worked hard, improved, grew, in a remarkably short time."

"And although you are not our direct subject now, know that you will always be welcome here."

"These doors will be open to you."

  Something warm in my chest.

  "Thank you, Your Majesty."

Caliope approached, placed a hand on my shoulder.

"And Sekire? Personally, as your instructor, I'm proud."

"You have immense potential. Don't waste it."

  "I won't. I promise."

  "Good."

She stepped back, returned to formal posture.

"May the winds guide you, may magic protect you, and may you find your path."

  "Thank you."

I bowed one last time, deeply, respectfully. And left.

Knowing I was leaving behind not just a castle, but people who cared. Who gave me a chance when no one else would. And I would be eternally grateful.

The carriage was waiting. Elegant, House Netherheart's symbol engraved on the side.

Clemearl stood beside it, talking with Caliope and Harven, finalizing diplomatic matters.

My small backpack was on the ground beside me. Everything I owned. Everything I was.

  "Ready?" a voice asked.

I turned. Mabel, Fuyumi, Hinata. They came to say goodbye. Again.

  "I think so."

"It'll all work out," Mabel hugged me. "I know it will."

  "And if it doesn't?"

"Then you deal with it, like you always have," Fuyumi hugged me next.

"With stubbornness and determination," Hinata completed, hugging me last.

"I'm going to miss you all."

"We will too," they said together.

  Clemearl finished her conversations, approached.

  "Ready, Sekire?"

I looked at my friends one last time. Then at the castle, imposing, where I'd spent weeks growing, learning, being more than a survivor. Then at the carriage, which would take me to a new chapter.

  "Yes. I'm ready."

  "Then let's go."

I picked up my backpack, walked to the carriage. Clemearl climbed in first, then helped me.

I sat, looking out the window. Where Mabel, Fuyumi, and Hinata were waving. Caliope and Harven watched, respectful. Servants I'd met, who I'd helped in the kitchens, who had been kind. All there, saying goodbye.

The carriage began to move. Slowly at first, then faster. Passing through the gates, leaving the castle, entering the city.

Ursoft passed in a blur of colors and sounds. And then we were on the open road.

Heading to Starlight Grove. Heading to Umbralis. Heading to Netherheart Mansion. Heading to the future.

Uncertain, frightening, but full of possibilities.

I looked at Clemearl, who was reading a document, calm.

  "Lady Clemearl?"

  "Yes?"

  "Thank you."

  She looked up, smiled.

  "You're welcome, Sekire."

  "For giving me a chance."

"You always had a chance. You just needed someone to see it."

  She paused.

"And I'm glad it was me."

  "Me too."

I turned back to the window, where the landscape was changing rapidly. Leaving behind the known, embracing the unknown.

But for the first time, I wasn't terrified. Because I wasn't alone.

I had Clemearl beside me. I had Mabel, Fuyumi, Hinata in my heart. I had a future ahead. And I had, finally, hope.

  Real, tangible, possible.

The carriage continued, toward the horizon. Toward Umbralis. Toward home.

  My new home.
