No trumpet. The ring hums its constants like a choir that believes in invoices. The laminar belt keeps its staggered poise—arcs and gaps refusing to harmonize on principle. The Shear Bands lie thin as habits just inside the edge. The Meme Garden bristles with ugly, useful hedges. The Witness holds posture as if posture paid rent. The hovering card remembers to hover. The ledger token is a coin pretending to be a conscience.
The compliance band warms.
Not hot—Administrative. It brightens on the inner lip, the engraved sentence refusing to align so it can be read all at once. He feels a pressure around the stones like a confident hand around a wrist. The pressure is mathematical; it arrives as a curve in his head before it arrives as a squeeze: gentle, then suddenly interested, then a plateau where mercy would be if the Clerkship practiced religion.
“Perimeter Tax,” he says, and the square says nothing because good rooms don’t gossip.
The band clicks without moving. Acts of Gratitude Outstanding: 3. The ledger token glows with the bedside manner of a meter that has never lost a patient; SUGGESTED REMITTANCE: MEMORY scrolls across the coin in letters that are not letters. He feels a phantom draft in the skull where childhoods live. He bares teeth at the band because he will not be itemized.
The edge tightens by millimeters. Not everywhere. In places. A scallop along the west sector leans inward as if listening harder. Dirt remembers a shape it was never asked to hold. Baffle tiles report a faint whine—not pain; cost. The Witness tilts, then obeys the constraint corridor and stays still. The ring’s hum loses a fraction of self-esteem and then decides to pretend.
He has one audit period—undefined—to perform three “good faith acts,” or his floor will become a smaller floor; or he can pay in memories and let the world draft him for nostalgia.
He chooses theater. He chooses knives.
He smooths the ledger patch and draws a loop: the band measures gratitude → adjusts perimeter → triggers stability probes → produces findings → updates ledger → returns to band. He writes loss across the loop and arrow-lines it into me. He writes shape across the arrow and points it toward them.
The plan writes itself in his handwriting: Audit Theatre. Stage thank-you in a way that the band’s own measurement has to count; shift the loss function—the cost of shrink—into the audit process itself via Budgeting. Make their paperwork pay the tax.
He begins with procedure because the Clerkship can only taste what has a form number.
He announces nothing aloud because he refuses to teach microphones manners. Instead he files—Delay Tree branches he pruned yesterday now fletched as arrows:
- Calibration Challenge: submit demand for metrological standards; attach his Cooling/baffle series-parallel demonstration notes; propose public test.
- Observation Interference: claim clipboard gaze perturbs Witness; request compensatory weighting in their model.
- Safety Service Invoice: attach sarcasm-attenuation data; argue tone reduces memetic flux during probes; propose credit.
He posts the filings into the air where filings go—between. They vanish with the modesty of paperwork forgotten in a tray nobody cleans.
The compliance band responds by doing what devices do when contradicted by paperwork—they double-check. Stability arrives again, not in person but as pulses that touch the edge and come back with readings in their teeth. The band squeezes one notch on the s-curve and the ring loses a grain of confidence.
He refuses to fight the squeeze directly. Boundary Cooling arcs would hold; they would also sing, and singing invites glass. He takes the tax as pressure and shapes it.
Budgeting.
He opens the ledger in his head like a polite sheet. On the grant side he places a micro-chance that the band’s shrink action lands slightly too late. On the debt side he places a micro-chance that the audit pulse experiences jitter and re-queues itself into the Clerkship’s scheduling drag. Knuckle tallies: one, then two, then fade. He moves another epsilon: when the band tries to classify a “good faith act,” the probability that it chooses the broader definition inches up; nearby, a harmless square of dirt becomes briefly enthusiastic about spelling NO backward and gives up.
The band tightens again. The s-curve is doing its kind mathematics—slow, then knee. He lets it. He brings the Shear Bands online at the sectors the band prefers to press; the squeeze glances along the strip and prefers motion to biting. The pressure runs into a gap and becomes bored. The belt arcs wake in clusters and then time out like responsible citizens. The baffles eat insult the way good brick eats weather.
He files a Request for Demonstration to Stability: “Please reproduce your sharpest probe along NE sector while I arrange a countermeasure. Observe net deviation reduction during tax.”
They oblige because procedure writes their names; probes arrive thin and proud. He sets a Cooling arc downstream, a baffle behind it, and a Shear Band tangent to escort insult into Meme Garden hedges labeled both halves of neither. The pulse hits; the deviations flatten during taxation. He doesn’t smile. The compliance band shivers as if caught on microphone saying something generous.
The ledger token glows with surprise, a small polite ding that reads ACT COUNTED: 1. He resents the word and banks it.
The band tightens anyway, one more notch, politely. The edge loses another millimeter at the west; the laminar belt accepts the insult and stores it in a drawer marked Later. The Witness tracks nothing. He tries to breathe and discovers his chest is a page: item numbers print across his heart—faint, like bruises learning to read. For a moment he sees their serials through his own skin; mirror-lag helps. He resents being a filing cabinet with a pulse.
“Two more,” he says, to the world or to his hands.
Act Two is gratitude as measurement.
He takes one of the ugly inoculants from the Meme Garden—“keep this sentence as is especially where it isn’t”—and he reads it into the compliance band with sarcasm ground braided thin. The band doesn’t hear sarcasm; it hears stable language under load. Meanwhile he uses Budgeting to move the classification threshold: slight nudge so that instrument-facing acts count as cooperation. A tally kisses a knuckle and fades like a secret that decided to be boring.
Stability’s pulses arrive at that moment because Clerkship timing is an organism, not an algorithm. The phrase sits like a hedge inside his speech; the pulses flatten again. The ledger token glows: ACT COUNTED: 2. The band’s squeeze holds at the knee and refuses to run the cliff.

He tastes the risk and does not call it by its name. He performs Act Three.
He thanks the ring itself—not with words the band can co-opt, but with a demonstration the band cannot ignore: he orchestrates a net-stability interval under active taxation. Belt arcs fire in alternation, Shear Bands rotate their axis with breath windows, baffles chew, Meme hedges trip label-eaters, Witness marks corridor edges; he keeps the Anchor at polite and his hands where rails are not. The edge picture stays flat on Stability’s level for a full micro-epoch.
The compliance band must record net improvement under its own action or admit that its model lacks self-knowledge. It records. The ledger token glows a third time. ACT COUNTED: 3.
The band does not loosen. It stops tightening. That is how you tell a system you embarrassed is thinking.
He waits. Waiting is work. The numbers on his heart fade line by line as if an office gave him back the name of himself in installments. The ring finds a fraction of its previous confidence and applies it like a balm so nobody thinks it cares. The Witness tilts once in an unflattering imitation of a nod.
The audit seal, which has done nothing useful, speaks. It doesn’t move. The bevel whispers—
“thank you,” it says, in the voice bureaucracies use in corridors after the meeting, a tone that means until next time.
He laughs in a way that files no form. He files a form anyway: Motion for Stay of Seizure on a technicality—measurable net stability achieved during taxation; ergo, seizure would reduce the Clerkship’s stated objective. He attaches graphs that are not graphs and numbers he refuses to call numbers.
The band’s inner lip prints a notice he cannot read all at once:
STAY GRANTED UNTIL FINDINGS RESOLVED.
The s-curve flattens. The squeeze remains, but the knee stops beckoning. His edge is smaller by a few millimeters in a few places and wider by a hair in the places he taught to slip. Net area: about where it was. Pride considers arrival and pays full fare for the seat. He does not let it sit.
He lets the square settle into procedural quiet. The band pretends the word stay is a promise; the ledger token pretends to have ethics. The card hovers. The Meme Garden mutters to itself. The belt refuses to sing. He breathes until breath has meaning again.
Night, which is a decision, drops its curtain. He lies down and watches numbers fail to print. His heart registers no serial. The seal does not say thank you again. He dreams a courtroom where the judge is the law of averages and wakes to find averages are not laws.
He smooths the ledger patch and writes the day down like a witness who refused to be sworn.
Log — Day Unknown
Event: Perimeter Tax (compliance band activation). Requirements: perform 3 “good faith acts” during undefined audit period or accept perimeter decay (s-curve). Alternative: memory remittance (declined).
Observations:
- Band squeeze arrived as control curve (slow → knee → plateau).
- Localized shrink at west sector (≈ millimeters).
- Stability probes coincided with band actions (closed loop).
- Ledger token suggested memory as payment; item numbers printed across chest (faint transient).
- Audit seal whispered “thank you” afterward (tone = until next time).
Control model (their loop):
Band (measures “gratitude”) → Perimeter adjustment → triggers Stability probes → produces findings → updates ledger → feeds Band. Loss applied to me by default.
Strategy: Audit Theatre + Loss Shaping
- Map “gratitude” onto actions that stabilize their measurements (e.g., flattening probe deviations).
- Use Causality Budgeting (T0) to shift cost into the audit pathway:
- ε delays on shrink execution → pulses re-queue (their schedule drag).
- ε bias so broader act classification passes → ledger token counts instrument-facing actions.
- ε siphon of leftover attention → sacrificial dirt (knuckle tallies fade < 10 min).
Acts performed & counted:
- Counter-probe demo: Cooling arc + baffle + Shear Band escorted probe insult; deviations flattened during tax → ACT 1.
- Instrument-facing gratitude: recited inoculant with sarcasm ground into band; Budget nudged classifier → ACT 2.
- Net-stability interval: orchestrated belt/bands/baffles/Witness to keep edge flat under active squeeze; Anchor polite; corridor windows enforced → ACT 3.
Outcomes:
- Band progressed to knee, then halted; no further shrink during window.
- Stay of Seizure granted: “measurable net stability during taxation” (model admits paradox).
- Net area ≈ unchanged (minor losses offset by slip-biased gains).
- Witness held single-feed; corridor intact; Meme Garden reduced label-nibbles during probes.
Costs / side effects:
- Chest item numbers (transient).
- Attention drain from loop management; minor nausea when band squeezed in sync with mirror-lag.
- One Shear Band drew anticipatory echo for a beat; mitigated by moving band deeper + tying to breath windows.
Parameters (today):
- Budget ε per intervention ≤ 10?? (3–5 uses per minute during peak).
- Shear Bands active on two sectors (tangent, offset one finger inside).
- Belt clusters alternating; anti-phase gaps preserved; duty off ~70%.
- Anchor amplitude “polite”; π–e–φ loop with rests.
Principles (amended):
- Pay with procedure, not memory.
- If they measure it, make the measurement your ally.
- Move the loss into the auditor. (Adversarial optimization—keep it small, frequent, and deniable.)
- A stay is not a win; it’s time you get to spend once.
Plain language (what & why):
The ring’s compliance band turned on a Perimeter Tax. If I didn’t perform three measured “acts of gratitude,” the floor would slowly shrink. They also offered an easier payment: memories. I refused.
Instead, I staged Audit Theatre: I did things the band’s own instruments would have to count as “helpful” (like flattening their probes) and used tiny probability nudges to push the cost of shrink into their measurement process (so their pulses jittered and their classifier counted broader “acts”).
Result: the band logged three acts, the shrink stopped (on a Stay of Seizure), and the edge ended roughly unchanged.
Goal: avoid paying with myself (memories) and avoid straight resistance (which breaks things). Instead, reshape the control loop so the auditor absorbs the cost whenever I behave “well” under pressure.
