Boss 2

I walked towards the veil of darkness after sufficiently doping up.

I could guess that it was some kind of portal.

  'It's not great for me.'

In an ideal world, I would be able to take down the monster without it even catching a glimpse of me.

But if I walked through the portal, who knew what kind of scenario I'd enter.

Would I come face-to-face with the boss instantly?

Would the boss instantly be alerted to my entry?

Would multiple grunt monsters be working alongside the boss?

I'd prefer if none of those were the case.

'There isn't all that much I can do to prepare.'

Seeing as I had killed all my teammates, there was no strategy to be made.

I'd simply have to adapt to whatever was thrown at me.

  "Welp, damn."

I sighed, deciding to just use everything I had.

Taking a deep breath, I expanded my circuits to fill with mana to their maximum, entering my mode state.

A fiery aura enveloped me, empowering my body and mind.

In one hand, I preemptively created the circle for magic bullet.

If I walked through and instantly came face to face with the boss, I'd at least be able to get the first hit, right?

My heart beat with anxiousness as I passed through the veil.

  ...

  'Hm.'

The situation I had just entered... was one I hadn't expected.

The room was an open arena-like area lit by several torches, which was within expectations.

But the boss... was acting in a way I hadn't foreseen.

In front of me was a large stone throne.

On that throne sat a huge orc, double my height and more than quadruple my overall size.

I was expecting to be immediately attacked, or something of the sort, but the orc was acting... quite calm?

Judging by his expression, he seemed equally confused at my presence.

  "Hyooman, why just one?"

As the deep reverberating voice of the orc reached my ears, my magic circle instantly shattered as my focus was completely interrupted.

I knew plenty of monsters could speak, but it was interesting to actually meet one.

Realising my lack of response could annoy the orc, I quickly spoke.

  Stolen novel; please report.

"Uh, are you asking why I don't have a party?"

"Yes. Strange... There should be many. So, why not?"

He seemed to have expected a large party to appear, so his confusion was fully genuine.

Deciding to answer honestly, I revealed the reason.

  "I killed them all."

At this, the orc tilted his head, with his tusks shifting strangely.

"Mmm... not very hyooman like, though?"

  "Yeah, I guess not."

I wondered how the orc had any idea of humanity, but now was not the time to ask that question.

"You seem strong, so it's OK."

  "So we'll fight, then?"

"Yes, fiery one. We shall fight."

He seemed to be calling me 'fiery one' based on my mode's aura.

Rising from his throne, I could see the full extent of his frame.

'Thank God I'm not a melee fighter.'

Considering how fucking huge that guy was, there was no chance I'd be able to win a physical clash.

He walked forward with an air of absolute confidence, causing me to lock in, understanding that the fight had begun.

As the orc went to grab a weapon lodged into the ground outside the arena, I shot a precise magic bullet towards his hand.

His hand exploded, yet the massive being seemed unperturbed.

  "Heh, pretty good."

I had no interest in listening to whatever the orc was going to say, so I immediately began constructing another magic bullet.

But, to my amazement, within only two seconds, the orc's entire hand regenerated.

Right as my second volley of bullets was about to hit, he grabbed his war axe and held it high, blocking a few of my bullets aimed at his head.

  "I'm also good, see?"

'Not just strong, he's also fast.'

The fact that he was able to react quickly enough to block some of my bullets was terrifying.

Fortunately, it wasn't a level where he could block all my bullets.

Though he had managed to block the ones aimed at his face, a few managed to hit his chest.

...Although it seemed to be completely ineffective, as the wounds healed before I could even finish studying them.

  "Here I come."

Holding his war axe as a shield in front of him, he began to run forward.

The arena was large, so it would take him a few seconds to reach me, but that wasn't exactly long for me to take action.

His axe was durable enough to block my bullets, so destroying his weapon wasn't an option.

Rapid fire also didn't look to be a good option, seeing as he would just tank the weaker bullets.

  Thump, Thump Thump!

I couldn't be sure if the thumping I was hearing was my heartbeat or his footsteps, or even both.

Realising I had to do something, I shot an array of explosive fire bullets towards the ceiling.

The orc seemed surprised at my actions, as he slowed down and glanced towards the ceiling.

I started running away from my position as several jagged stalactites fell to the floor of the arena.

As they fell, a large cloud of thick dust kicked up, causing the arena to become foggy.

I thought about rapid-firing towards the area I had last seen the orc, but that would only serve to reveal my position whilst dealing no meaningful damage.

Instead, I used the brief pause to think about my next actions.

'He doesn't care about getting his body harmed, but he blocked the shots going to his head.'

Clearly, even if I blasted a hole through his stomach, he'd be able to regenerate just fine.

But maybe if I blew his head open, his regeneration would fail to activate?

It was a fair conclusion, so I decided to go with it.

I could hear the orc's footsteps through the dust cloud, his massive frame allowing no possibility for stealth.

I silently moved in the opposite direction, trying to create more distance.

"Hmph! Hyooman, I thought you were like a monster! But I guess even a fiery one like you is still cowardly!"

The orc, enraged by my sneakiness, swung his axe like a whirlwind, blasting away the remaining dust particles.

I shot three powerful bullets straight towards his head, surprising the orc.

  'Damn.'

He dodged, with my bullets merely tearing out a chunk of his shoulder, something that didn't bother him at all.

He began running towards me again, his face contorting into a downright demonic expression.

I couldn't help but notice the sweat on my palms.

I thought about shooting the ceiling again, but seeing how he had just blown away the dust with the wind of his attack, that didn't seem promising.

Instead, a different idea came to mind.

Though the orc was rapidly approaching, I had enough time to create a circle to shoot out a volley of my maximum power bullets.

As they shot from my finger, I aimed the first two at his head, and the other three at his right arm.

If I couldn't break his weapon, making him drop the weapon would also work.

  "Urrk!"

A monstrous sound came out as his arm exploded, causing his weapon to drop to the floor.

But to my surprise... he continued charging.

  "Argh!"

He used his remaining arm, an arm almost as large as my entire being, to swat me away like a fly.

The impact sent me flying through the air.

  Crack!

I watched Advent of the Hero die the way it was always meant to: with the Demon King standing in the last city, and every name wiped from the raid party.

When the server went black, a prompt offered a new cycle, and I accepted it, expecting nothing but a joke.

Only, I woke beneath falling snow at the beginning of the story, and found that there were no menus, no logout, no respawns. Even the [Hero] gift, which belonged to every player, now belonged to me alone.

With the story's ending already set in stone, I grit my teeth, raised my spear and prepared to carve a new one.
