Adam helped Charlie with pulling the cart in order to let Kate, Althea and Kleoff gather some other supplies like ammunition and some packed foods.
“You think this would work?” Adam asked Charlie as they pulled the heavy steel cart.
“I don't know, it's been years since they tried it and it was too loud to try it here anyways”
“Why is there even a machine gun in a ranger’s cabin?” Adam asked, the wheels of the cart creaking as they started going downhill.
“I think he was a collector, and when the thing happened and they found this, they tried to restore it and they have also tried using it before and it works but they never did again cause it makes too much noise”
“What if it doesn't work?”
“Well nothing has changed right? We're the ones you needed and we're the ones you get”
Charlie said with a smile, fully aware that himself and Kleoff probably were nowhere near enough.
After some time they finally managed to arrive at the car. The two of them attached the cart behind the car.
Adam hoped that the car would be strong enough to pull the cart without straining the fuel lines too much.
It took them a few minutes before Adam finally ensured the cart was secured, by then the rest of the group arrived as well.
Kleoff was leading both thunder and lighting with their reins. Althea and Katte on the other hand carried two backpacks each.
The two then proceeded to store the bags inside the car’s trunk and then proceeded to join Adam and Charlie.
It was still early in the morning if they left now they had a chance to reach the shore by the evening. Of course that was considering they all used the car but it was unlikely, they could not all fit in and much more the car probably can't handle their weight with the machine gun attached to the back of the car.
“We're fine, we could speed up, I think they can handle it,” Charlie told Adam. He seemed to notice Adam's thoughts.
He then nodded and slid inside the car along with Althea at the backseat and Kate at the passenger seat.
As he did, Adam saw Charlie and Kleoff mount their respective horses. Charlie tipped his hat as he flicked the reins of his horse and started galloping onwards.
Kleoff did the same, and within a few seconds the brothers almost faded out of sight.
Adam started the car and pressed the gas, the engine roared to life and they followed the brothers.
During the trip everyone in the car was quiet but not the hopeless kind, if anything they all seemed determined in rescuing the residents.
However Adam thought that Althea wasn't only determined at saving the residents and reclaiming the island but also getting back at Nolan for what he did.
Adam did as well but despite never really voicing out his thoughts he still doesn't understand Nolan's sudden change, he just felt acting out of grief and anger wasn't their best way to go. Of course, remembering their past conflict with Althea about the topic he decided to keep the thoughts to himself
Even after a few minutes the brothers were still nowhere to be seen. Adam assumed that the brothers increased their pace so that they wouldn't be left behind and still have some time to let their horses rest every now and then. They have decided that they should meet up at Kiel’s old house, of course neither of the brothers knew where it was but Kate gave them a map with a scribble of where it was located. Charlie was about to argue about them needing a map when he remembered that they were traveling with Kate.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Hours have passed and the road seemed peaceful aside for occasional greys popping out of the road every now and then. All which Althea shot down with her bow. Adam had found her growth greatly astounding, she just learned it in a few days and now she was able to shoot from the car through the window. Although not all of her shoots hit their target like Kiel it was still amazing to Adam considering they were constantly moving.
They briefly pause each time Althea shoots a grey in order to retrieve the arrows, eventually the greys turn less and less frequent as they get closer to the island.
The green hills and trees faded as they reached grey concrete, broken cars and rusted lampposts, giving the place an awfully dull vibe.
Finally at around the afternoon the group got sight of the two brothers resting outside at what seemed to be a restaurant that had various tables and chairs that lay scattered on the ground.
The restaurant itself of course was in ruins, the glass windows were all broken and moss was starting to form around its walls.
Adam parked the car a little far enough to not scare the horses and got out of the car suggesting they should rest and eat first.
Kate nodded and took one of the bags and handed it to Adam. The other two bags that were left were probably ammunition and clothes Adam thought as he took the bag and walked towards the brothers.
“Anything you can suggest from the menu?”
He said jokingly as he approached.
“I don't know we packed our own lunch you might as well ask the other customers”
Charlie replied pointing at their horses happily munching in the overgrown grass by the side of the street.
“I'm not really into vegan sadly” Adam said with a chuckle as he picked up one of the foldable chairs lying on the ground. He wiped off the top of its surface and sat on it, placing the chair near Charlie and Kleoff's table.
Althea and Kate followed shortly, each taking a chair on their own and joining the rest of the group.
“He likes meat more,” Kate said, apparently hearing the conversation.
“You could have come up with a thousand ways to phrase that and it would have not sounded bad” Adam said as he opened the bag and took their packed lunch.
After the short rest and lunch the group then continued to hit the road. Adam felt he needed that rest, they really haven't bonded with everyone like the way that they used to.
It felt to him like every time they had a major problem to be able to rest properly. Like every monster they kill there just seemed to be a new one.
Maybe there is no end to it, he thought with a sigh, almost already losing the rest he just had.
They traveled another several hours before they had arrived at Kiel's house. Adam saw the two brothers waiting for them at the front door. The sun had already set and darkness had surrounded the entire place with the only light source being the car’s headlights.
Adam went outside the car and took a flashlight to light the way. He slung a backpack and headed first with Althea and Kate following him, both carrying some of the bags as well.
“Why are you waiting outside?” Adam asked.
Charlie shrugged.
“I don't know, it might have been the wrong house?”
“What then? The owner wouldn't sue you” Adam said with a smile as he headed inside, opening the barely attached door.
“They might eat us though” Kleoff suggested, which to his credit had a point.
The brothers along with Althea and Kate followed. They had to light up the lanterns that were scattered by the house in order to be able to see each other from the darkness.
“Wait” Kate suddenly said as she placed her bag on top of the table.
“What?” Althea asked beside her.
“This isn't how the chairs were arranged when we left”
“You sure you weren't just misremembering it?”
Adam asked which resulted in Kate shooting him a threatening glance.
Nope, she did not, Adam thought.
“What are those supposed to mean? It's just chairs” Althea said.
“No, someone had been here” Kate declared as she dashed up stairs to check the rooms.
The group exchanged glances before deciding to follow her.
“When they arrived at the second floor they saw Kate checking each of the rooms until finally stopping into one of them.
Adam heard her gasp as she stepped inside.
They all immediately followed her inside, Adam recognized it as Kiel's room, the one that he had slept at.
By the ground lay shards of glass along with the Kiel's crumbled family pictured.
“Who did that?” Althea asked.
“Maybe a random grey just got in-” Charlie was suggesting when Kate interrupted.
“It was too clean to be a grey, also i dont think any grey with just randomly burst into a room to break a picture frame”
“What if it's not a random grey, instead a smart one?” Adam suggested and everyone knew what he meant.
“That was unlikely, I don't think Linda would be here,” Charlie argued.
“Even you? Stop calling that with a name, it just- doesn't feel right” Kate paused.
“If it wasn't Linda then it must have been Nolan,” Kleoff suggested.
“It might have been, but he never knew about this place, we never told him about it” Kate replied.
“Now that I think about it we never even told him about our game but he knew it” Adam said. He was confused, this would be an act that matches Nolan's behavior, almost an invitation.
But that wouldn't have answered the question how? If no one had told him about this place how could he potentially have found it.
“It doesn't matter, we should rest, tomorrow would be- busy” Charlie declared with a slight pause trying to think of the suitable word.
Busy seemed to be an understatement for Adam.
With that the rest of the group decided to settle for the night, with Adam, Charlie And Kleoff at the Kiel's room and Althea and Kate at the larger one. The three men had to play rock paper scissors just to figure out who would be going to the bed and who would lay on the floor. Althea of course argued that she and Kate should use Kiel's room and the rest of them in the larger room.
But neither one of the three listened and continued with the rock paper scissors anyways with Kleoff being the winner.
With that Adam and Charlie laid on each side of the floor thinking about tomorrow's busy day
