CHAPTER VIII Countdown - 6

Scene 08-6 – Battle at the Mirador Tower

Location: Carretera Panamericana Sur, a short distance from the Mirador Tower (Nazca Lines)

  Time: 05:48 (UTC-5)

  Countdown: 02:16:08 to liftoff

Setting: World Order vehicle halted between two hostile firing lines

They were now stopped in front of a blockade capable of delivering overwhelming firepower, but the real trouble was just getting started.

In the distance, a formation of six Apache helicopters, in a fan-shaped formation, was moving toward them.

The display on Genevieve’s glasses activated; two red warning indicators lighting up on either side of the lenses left no doubt about what was coming.

  Alert – Power level critical

  Head-Up Display – ENERGY STATUS ? power_cell: 27 % ? thermal_load: stable ? cooldown_system: nominal

HUD – REMAINING CAPACITY ? available offensive shots: → 10 launches (standard configuration) or ? active defense: → 3 shields → single-shield duration: 5 min → total coverage: 15 min

  HUD – CONSUMPTION ESTIMATE (real time) ? 1 launch ≈ 3 % energy ? 1 shield (5 min) ≈ 11–12 % energy ? critical threshold: <15 % (non-essential systems disabled)

HUD – TACTICAL WARNING ? shields + evasive maneuver: not sustainable ? shields + vehicle stall: sustainable until T–0 ? prolonged engagement: not recommended

Genevieve’s three companions had taken cover behind the vehicle, immobilized in the middle of the road. Even with the armored hull, a fight against a fully equipped military unit was a losing fight.

Genevieve sent another black arrow skyward. The arrow split into black fibers, forming a shield dome around them. Just in time.

The first bursts arrived almost immediately. Tracer rounds broke apart against the shield dome in brief, dull flashes, deflected and dissipated before reaching them. On impact, the rounds fell back onto the asphalt and the sands lining the road, bouncing across the pavement and rocks like droplets of molten metal.

Some glowing metal droplets splashed onto the checkpoint as well, damaging vehicles, setting equipment ablaze, and piercing the suits of several soldiers as they screamed in pain and were forced to tear them off.

An automatic launcher opened fire a short distance ahead. A grenade detonated against the surface of the dome, deforming it for an instant, as if the black matter had turned fluid; then the structure snapped back into shape. The shock-wave dispersed along the barrier, venting away from the dome.

From above, one of the Apaches opened fire. A coherent, silent beam traced a precise line through the air and struck the dome with exacting precision. The dark surface lit up with intermittent streaks, a sign of rapid thermal buildup. The barrier held—but not without consequences.

Shrapnel, fragments of concrete, and vaporized sand fell around the vehicle. The ground vibrated under the continuous impacts. The dome remained intact, but its stability was compromised. The fibers started to break down.

Genevieve launched a second arrow, striking the highest point of the dome and temporarily restoring full integrity.

It would not last long. And there was just enough energy left for one final arrow.
