November 9th, 1918

All is fine and warm beside our beautiful fire that we managed to set with the few materials we have left. Yuri gently tends to it with an iron rod. It pops and lashes out every few seconds, but no one minds. We are finally warm. All the rest of the boys, including me, sit around it, glorifying it like a holy relic. The small group of hunters in our unit dropped their finding and ran to us as they saw smoke rise to the heavens. They sit beside the rest of us, cleaning the snow off of the logs beside them. One of their caps flew off and everyone ran to make sure it didn't touch the fire. We couldn't have it go off.

Daniel jokes and mocks about, causing uproars of laughter from our group. We can, for we are finally warm. Our hands are not frozen any longer. I have been checking for frostbite in the unit for the past few days, making sure not one man has it. We can't afford to lose someone's abilities because of something as avoidable as frostbite. Even now, the heat is fleeting. We will enjoy it as it lasts. Albert, the one from Canada, stood with a grin just a few minutes prior. His grey clothes flapped with the oncoming wind. Almost all of us are out of uniform.

"We have turned the tides, I do believe. We have gotten the information for the Allies and will soon be rescued! We have made it through these trying times without many materials and our wireless. We will prevail through this next leg of our journey! Boys, we're going home! Now, we will travel back to base tomorrow, but let's celebrate our achievements!" Albert announced to us. We all broke out in celebration.

Oh, what such a wonderful day! A successful operation by us all, a fire, and practically assured life. I can foresee the war coming to an end very soon and us being awarded our places in our nations. What a wonderful day that shall be; oh, what a time to be alive. Now we may joke and laugh again through our life without fear. How mighty a statement.

Lawrence, a man from the US, stood, "I would like to thank our leaders: the Russian, Yuri, and the Frenchman, Felix, for our success this day!"

As everyone got up and celebrated even more, I pressed my thawing lips together. He couldn't be serious. I did almost nothing. It was all them and what they had done. Not I. Especially what Lawrence had done. Dear Lawrence, such an amazing friend to me throughout this year. He led the unit bravely; something I can't muster up the courage to do.

Soon, we all sat around the fire, laughing and joking even more. I am reclined against a very uncomfortable log writing this. However, it is a warm, uncomfortable log. The young Italian boy, Angelo, has already begun talking to me about simply everything he can muster. He has given me more migraines than the mission itself.

What a wonderful day to be alive! What a wonderful day!
