Chapter 14: Invisible Boundaries

"Hah... hah... hah..." The sound of his gasping breath echoed through the narrow, dark passage like a knife scraping against rock. Noah was running with all the strength he had left, ignoring the pain in his broken ribs that stabbed into his lungs with every inhalation. Every few steps, he glanced back in terror, his eyes piercing the gloom, afraid that the nightmare would ambush him from behind. Despite his continuous running, his ears clearly caught that faint, deadly sound... ... footsteps being driven into the soil. Something was hunting him; that adult ant was tracking his trail. Even if the sound was still relatively distant, it was approaching with terrifying steadiness, making dread gnaw at Noah’s heart.

"I must find a place to hide!!" his inner voice screamed in despair.

He was fully aware that if he faced an adult ant now, with his shattered body and primitive weapon, it would be impossible to overcome it—he would inevitably die, torn to shreds. Yet, he was running through a stone labyrinth without any guide, completely blind, not knowing what the next turn concealed. At any moment, he could encounter a monster that would end his life miserably. But on the other hand, if he stopped and remained in place, he was dead without a doubt. He had no choice but to gamble his life and run toward the unknown.

And suddenly... unfortunately, his worst nightmare manifested before his eyes.

After minutes of blind running, Noah stopped abruptly, his feet slipping slightly on the slick floor as he stared ahead in desperate shock that paralyzed his limbs. "No... damn it!!" he thought, biting his lip until it nearly bled.

A few meters ahead, the passage split into two stony paths: one extending straight into the darkness, and the other clearly descending. But the problem wasn't the labyrinth or the choice of path; the problem stood clearly before the entrances of the two caves. Two giant monster ants stood there—the same size as the one he had faced before—standing in a deadly stillness as if they were guarding the entrance. Their long antennae moved slowly in the air, twitching and rotating as if they were sensing the environment, or perhaps communicating in a terrifying silence.

Noah froze in place with intense horror, feeling his blood turn to ice. He was completely surrounded. There was no longer any chance for open escape; three monsters of this size meant certain, literal death.

With a swift instinctive movement, Noah pressed himself against the cold rocky wall, crushing his body against the jagged stones as if trying to melt and become part of them, hoping not to be noticed. Fortunately, it seemed that the two giant ants ahead had not yet been able to detect him.

But this gave him no sense of relief. Behind him, in the depths of the passage he had come from, a predator was approaching and would reach him at any moment, exposing his position. He had fallen into a death trap, between the hammer of the pursuer and the anvil of the guards.

  "Damn it!... Damn it!..."

Noah panted in muffled silence, his eyes darting frantically between the guards in front and the creeping darkness from behind. He knew all too well that panic would be useless, especially in these critical seconds. Yielding to fear meant death. What he needed now was something more important than running... he needed a plan. He had to survive, or die trying.

Noah racked his brain for a way out, scanning his narrow surroundings. He had nothing but his paralyzed hand dangling like a dead branch, his primitive spear, and a few scattered rocks at his feet. Suddenly, a thought flashed in his mind—the only straw that might save him from this certain drowning.

"Despite the size and power of these creatures... they are still just ants with low intelligence!" Noah muttered these words as if convincing himself. He lowered himself with extreme caution, careful not to make any friction, and gripped a solid rock. He took a ready stance, tensing the muscles of his healthy arm, while his throat overflowed with an unbearable bitterness; his memory instantly recalled the last time he tried to throw a stone to save his life—the result was catastrophic and had nearly led to his death.

  Whish!

The stone launched from his hand with startling force; his new physical build made throwing objects over long distances terrifyingly easy. The stone flew through the air, piercing the silence above the heads of the two giant ants... Whish!

  (Clack!)

The echo of the impact in the silence of the cave was more than enough. Just as Noah had hoped, the two ants jolted; one moved quickly toward the source of the sound deep in the cave to investigate, while the other approached from the opposite side to watch its companion and cover its back. In that moment, a narrow gap opened in the descending path... that was the sole opportunity Noah had been waiting for.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

With the silence and steadiness of a ghost, Noah held his breath until his lungs felt ready to burst. He began to step with lethal caution, hugging the rock wall, dragging his exhausted body inch by inch. With every advance, the horrifying details of the remaining ant grew clearer, until he was only five meters away from its massive abdomen.

He could see everything with nauseating clarity: its pointed stinger, the dense, fine bristles covering its bony carapace, and its sharp hind legs that resembled spears, driven into the soil like steel stakes. Suddenly, he caught a shadow moving from the opposite side; the other ant was returning! The monster in front of Noah began to backtrack slowly toward its original position, threatening to crush him or expose him.

Noah's heart hammered like war drums. He tightened his grip on his spear until his knuckles turned white, bracing for a suicidal clash; the slightest error now meant being torn to pieces.

Suddenly, the ant stopped. It turned with a terrifying, mechanical slowness until it was staring directly at him.

A searing bitterness filled Noah's throat, and a burning sensation gripped his chest from the sheer terror that paralyzed his movement. The ant began to approach him with measured, steady steps, its antennae vibrating violently in the air before him, as if scenting a foreign odor or trying to confirm the nature of this entity clinging to the wall. Death was crawling toward him on six legs.

The ant was scrutinizing the spot where Noah stood with meticulous precision. To its instinct, his presence was something "strange," out of place. In that moment, Noah wished from the depths of his heart that he could melt into the stone wall and become part of the cave’s inanimate rock. The ant raised one of its long, serrated legs and began to extend it slowly toward the wall to feel the entity pressed against it...

Suddenly, the silence of the place was shattered by a shriek that shook the corridor’s foundations:

  (SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!)

From the other end of the hallway, exactly opposite the passage Noah had come from, a new monster began to emerge slowly from the folds of the darkness. Though this ant was slightly smaller than the others, one glance was enough for Noah to realize it was from an entirely different class; its legs had an unnatural thickness, armed with sharp lateral spines like sword blades. Its exoskeleton was like a polished steel armor reflecting the pale light, suggesting it was impenetrable, while its head was surrounded by prominent bony protrusions forming what looked like a terrifying war "helmet."

Noah stood stunned for a fleeting moment, watching this new monstrosity, before quickly turning back to the ant in front of him. Its attention had been completely diverted, focused entirely on the shrieks echoing from the hallway.

"Now or never!!" Noah’s mind screamed.

With a suicidal burst of speed, Noah slipped past the ant’s mandibles, channeling every ounce of latent strength in his legs to leap into the descending cavern. His movement was so sudden and swift that the two guards didn't register what had happened until fractions of a second later. Once they realized he had broken through, rage ignited in their massive bodies, and they lunged after him in a frantic bid to crush him.

But the ants' lack of intelligence and their sheer bulk became Noah’s salvation. Due to the narrowness of the entrance and their colossal size, both ants charged forward at the exact same moment, becoming wedged side-by-side at the mouth of the cave. Carapaces collided, legs became entangled, and the entrance was completely obstructed by their stuck bodies, unintentionally forming a barricade that prevented any other pursuer from passing behind Noah.

Noah left the din of the struggling ants and their furious screeches behind, plunging into the depths of the descending path, his heart hammering violently against his chest. He ran, his body trembling with adrenaline, glancing back every few seconds to see a sight that briefly gladdened his heart: the two guards were stuck, blocking the exit. But that sudden spark of joy was crushed under the feet of the coming nightmare. In the blink of an eye, and under Noah's stunned gaze, the bodies of the two wedged ants were transformed into scattered shreds; their armor was sliced open and their fluids sprayed like leaves in a furious gale.

The culprit was none other than that adult ant that had been hunting him from the start... it was glowing with a savage aura and a black, merciless rage.

"What? It killed its own kind?!" Noah's mind screamed in horror. "S-strong!! At this rate, it will catch me in a second!"

There was no longer room for thought or amazement. Noah threw all his weight and focus into the flight. He propelled his body to a superhuman speed he had never known, stunned by the power of his legs as they struck the ground, driving him forward like an arrow. Yet, despite this miraculous speed, the distance between him and the monster behind him did not widen. Quite the opposite; the thuds of its feet striking the earth grew closer with a deadly steadiness, pulse after pulse.

The sound became so close that Noah felt the monster's cold breath dancing upon the nape of his neck. As he cast one last glance behind him, he sank into a well of sheer helplessness.

  (Thump... Thump... Thump... Thump...)

The ant was galloping with a terrifying calmness—the calm before the storm—crushing solid rocks under its pointed feet like biscuits, surging toward him with a destructive mechanical precision. The air pressure generated by its momentum struck Noah's back with force, like a cyclone trying to swallow him whole.

Then—just as he turned his gaze forward again to fix his path... he stopped abruptly. Noah froze in place, feeling his heart drop into the depths of his gut.

Right before his eyes... was a solid rock wall. The end of the dark corridor... and the end of his brief journey in this world. A dead end, with no crevice, no gap, and no exit.
