Chapter 2

Donnie and Allan walk out of the front door. "So you'll think we should ever come back home," Donnie asked Allan. "I don't see why we would, it's not very protected," Allan responded. He was fiddling with his phone, by this point it was no longer working. "Yeah you're right. I don't think the school is a very good option either. But, I don't have a concrete plan right now so it's chill," Donnie spoke as if they were discussing Saturday plans, not the rest of their lives in the apocalypse. They walked down the street, a usual path they'd taken often, walking home during high school. Donnie's mind would drift, reminiscing about his senior year. "Wait, bro, I just remembered something," Donnie got Allan's attention. "What's up?" "Remember that day we walked home from school, and we found that shopping cart?" "Yeah we took turns riding in it until we got home." "You think it's still in the backyard?" Allan shrugged, "I'm not sure, let's go see." Donnie and Allan quickly turned around, curiosity turning into excitement. Walking through the gate that separated the front from the backyard, Donnie swiftly turned his head back and forth. His eyes stopped at a corner of the backyard near the shed, "Yo there it is." Donnie ran over to pick up the over turned shopping cart. "We got transportation," Donnie said inspecting the cart. It was now rusted, with only an old pillow on the inside and a sign on the front that said "Bro-Mobile." They placed their backpacks in the cart then Allan quickly hopped in, "I got first ride. Drive me bro." Donnie rolled his eyes at the command, but he didn't really mind; he preferred being a driver.

They continued walking down the street (Allan rolled). "For an apocalypse it's pretty quiet out here," Allan remarking, turning to look around a bit. Donnie thought about it for a moment, "You know the neighborhood was always kind of quiet. We should be vigilant regardless though." Allan was right, there wasn't much noise besides the rattle of the cart and the usual ambience. They carried on, walking in the middle of the street. There weren't any cars coming, unusual for this part of the street because it led onto a main street. The two began to grow uneasy, this kind of silence wasn't ordinary, it was deafening. It took about a half an hour, but they were approaching the main street. They noticed smoke billowing from the horizon. "Yo do you see that? I think there's a fire," Allan points at the smoke. "Yeah obviously. Now I'm getting nervous," Donnie says, he pace slowing. Despite the apparent imminent danger they advanced. As they got closer, things got louder.

There was a plethora of noise: screaming, groaning, the woosh of a fire, and the screeching of metal. It made Donnie's stomach turn. As they finally made it to the origin of the chaos, they were rendered speechless. The scene before them was enough to evoke tears. There were dozens of vehicles piled up, the road behind them was completely invisible. People were still trying to crawl from the wreckage of the pile up. "HELP!!!" "PLEASE!!!" "AGGGHHHH!!!" some could still speak, others weren't so lucky. Many were completely engulfed in flames. And the ones who weren't, were feasting on anyone they could get their hands on. The zombies were ravenous, tearing into people left and right. Even if someone was lucky enough to escape the pile up and the fire, there was no chance they were making it past the infantry of the undead. There were just too many. It wasn't long before they noticed Donnie and Allan. They stumbled forward, eager for another meal. Allan reached behind him, frantically patting at Donnie, "Bro turn around! They're coming! Come on!" Donnie could barely hear anything. His heart was beating out of his chest. "DONNIE! THEY'RE RIGHT IN FRONT OF US!" Allan yelled. Donnie regained his sense, he quickly whipped the cart around. He ran, pushing the cart with all his force, the zombies were not far behind. "I can't-- what was that?" Donnie says as he runs. "Zombies bro, what else did you expect?" Allan responded, looking back worried that the zombies would somehow gain on them.
