Winston tilted his head as he stepped out of the small tent. “What’s on your mind?”
“During the monster charge, you mentioned seeing something approaching with a level of 120,” Niles said.
Felix, standing nearby, stiffened. “Level 120? That’s… concerning.”
Winston stretched his back, letting out a long breath. “Well, I may have exaggerated a bit to create a sense of urgency, make the Xandrians surrender faster.”
Niles sighed in relief. “Oh, thank the heavens. Good thinking, Winston!”
But Winston didn’t smile back. His voice remained cold and serious. “The actual level I saw was 118.”
Niles practically exploded. “THAT’S BASICALLY THE SAME THING!” He flailed his arms, his entire body language a protest of sheer absurdity.
Felix rubbed his temples. “Niles, you’re going to wake everyone. And possibly alert the enemy.”
Niles hissed in a loud whisper, “BUT… THE… LEVEL… MAN!”
Ignoring Niles’s theatrics, Felix turned back to Winston. “Did you get a look at it?”
Winston shook his head. “No, but—”
Niles leaned in. “BUT WHAT?”
Winston raised an eyebrow. “I was just getting to that.”
Niles, a mix of horror and desperation on his face, motioned frantically. “Speak faster!”
Winston sighed. “The level 118 presence I detected… it was high up in the trees. Every other monster in that charge was on the ground.”
Niles took a deep breath, his mind racing. “A level 118 monster that climbs trees… Yup. We’re definitely up against something bananas.” He squinted at the other two, waiting. No reaction. “My puns are wasted on you guys,” he muttered, then waved his hand. “Alright, lead the way.”
They moved quietly through the camp, waking the others. The air was thick with tension, the kind that made every sound feel louder, every movement heavier.
Then they heard it. Thousands of footsteps, some soft, some heavy. The crackling of branches under careful weight. The night sky above barely illuminated the monstrous figures shifting through the darkness. Orcs. Goblins. Creatures they didn’t recognize.
“Kobolds,” Felix whispered, pointing. The creatures moved on two legs, shorter than humans but built like hounds. Unlike goblins, their weapons were well-crafted, almost tactical.
Then came the sound. A low, dragging noise, like something massive being pulled through the dirt. Heavy steps, deceptively soft but each carrying the weight of something immense.
Niles exhaled, barely above a whisper. “The Big Bonker.”
Winston murmured level readings under his breath, scanning the horde. His face darkened. “There are thousands of them.”
His voice wavered for the first time that night. Would the barrier hold?
They crouched lower, watching as the monsters encircled the barrier, swallowing it completely in the tide of their march.
“Finn, stay close to me,” Felix whispered.
“Yes,” the boy replied, gripping his spear tightly.
Felix turned to the rest. “Aim for their heads. Don’t chase anyone outside.” His eyes flicked toward Niles at that last part. “Spread out and cover as much ground as possible.”
Then he asked, “Is Wolf allowed to fight?”
Niles shook his head. “Not this time.”
Felix nodded. “Wolf, provide backup if anything happens.”
Wolf folded his arms. “It’s not like I can just sit back and relax anyway.”
Everyone had their role. Everyone was armed.
At the center of their formation, Lina stood dressed as a mage, her hands raised as if channeling energy into the barrier. It was all an illusion—a trick to deceive the monsters into thinking she was its sole source of power. Wolf lit torches around her, further drawing attention to the act before stepping back to oversee the battlefield.
They moved into position, few against many.
The closer Niles got to the barrier, the more he could hear—goblins gibbering in their guttural tongue, the clicking of strange creatures’ teeth, the heavy breaths of beasts ready to pounce.
And then, like the opening bell of a brutal tournament, one monster roared.
The sound rippled through the horde. From every direction outside the barrier, countless voices answered the call.
Then came the charge.
Thousands upon thousands of monsters stormed forward. Goblins with jagged weapons clawed and bit at the barrier. Orcs wielding massive clubs slammed against it with bone-rattling force. Kobolds and other creatures joined the assault, hacking, tearing, searching for weakness.
And then—BOOM.
The Big Bonker’s hammer crashed down onto the barrier, sending a deep tremor through the ground. The magical shield shimmered but held.
“ATTACK!” Felix commanded.
He lunged toward the barrier’s edge, Finn close behind him.
Niles surged forward, spear in hand. Winston followed, his stance tight and focused. Vulcan moved with practiced ease, his spear thrusting high and low, targeting weak points. Tesla, gripping his sword, advanced cautiously, careful not to lean too far forward, lest he be yanked out of safety.
At the center, Lina kept her arms raised, playing her part. From a distance, it would look like she was pouring her magic into the shield, reinforcing it with sheer willpower. In reality, the glow around her was pure deception.
Wolf continued his watch, his sharp eyes tracking Niceland’s ‘army’ amid the chaos.
Meanwhile, Felix cut through goblins and kobolds relentlessly, his blade a blur. With each kill, he felt the rush of combat, his instincts sharpening.
A message flashed before him:
[You’ve defeated a Kobold – You’ve received 52 EXP.]
And then—
[Level increased: 14 → 15. Please select which stat to increase.]
Without hesitation, Felix shouted, “Speed!” as he drove his weapon into another foe.
[Speed increased by 1.]
The system’s notification flickered and vanished.
But there was no time to think about it. The battle had only just begun.
Finn thrust his spear with fierce determination, though his strikes mostly grazed the enemies. Still, he pressed on, believing that sooner or later, he’d land a solid hit.
Vulcan fought alongside him, his spear finding its mark over and over. Each kill racked up experience points, his levels climbing rapidly.
“Strength!” he called out after every level-up, his power steadily increasing.
Winston struck high and low, his attacks methodical. Some monsters he didn’t kill outright—he left them wounded, knowing many would collapse from their injuries. And sure enough, some did.
[You’ve defeated a Goblin – You’ve received 19 EXP.]
[Level increased: 6 → 7. Please select which stat to increase.]
“Strength,” Winston said between breaths, growing stronger.
Niles, meanwhile, put Wolf’s earlier teachings to good use, cutting down several monsters with precise technique.
“I must be close to leveling up now!” he grinned.
Then, he caught sight of Tesla.
The engineer had just reached the barrier’s edge, his sword raised. His eyes squeezed shut as he slashed blindly at the creatures outside. But he overextended. His arm slipped beyond the barrier.
And that’s when it struck.
The Chimera’s tail lashed out like a coiled serpent, its fangs sinking deep into Tesla’s flesh.
Tesla stiffened instantly—paralyzed. His body teetered forward, about to tumble out of the barrier’s protection, when suddenly—
Flash.
Wolf’s teleportation skill activated.
He appeared beside Tesla in an instant, catching the limp engineer and pulling him back inside. Tesla’s body collapsed onto the ground, unmoving except for the rise and fall of his shallow breaths. His feet, still outside the barrier, became an immediate target—goblins swarmed, hacking at them with jagged daggers.
Wolf yanked him in completely, dragging him to safety before returning to the fight.
Niles cupped his hand around his mouth and hollered:
“TESLA, YOU DIDN’T EVEN GET ONE?! YOU’RE JUST THE WORST!”
Tesla, completely conscious but utterly paralyzed, could do nothing to respond. He could only breathe. Only watch. And where he had fallen, his vision was trapped on the battlefield—the monstrous horde slamming against the barrier, desperate to break through and finish him off.
This was the closest Tesla had ever been to a waking nightmare.
The battle raged on. Felix, Winston, Vulcan, Finn, and Niles struck down monster after monster, their weapons a blur of steel and blood. But the enemy was relentless. Claws and blades pounded against the barrier, searching for even the smallest crack.
Some creatures hesitated, uncertainty creeping into their wild eyes. Had their assault been for nothing?
Then Lina’s voice cut through the chaos.
“WOLF, HELP ME! I’M RUNNING OUT OF MANA!”
A complete lie.
The monsters couldn’t understand human speech, but they recognized desperation when they heard it. The robed woman, glowing at the heart of the battlefield, was calling for aid—surely, this meant they were close to breaking through.
Their hesitation vanished.
Shrieking with renewed fury, they doubled their efforts, slamming against the barrier with everything they had.
Niles didn’t know how many levels they had gained, only that his allies’ voices echoed around him, shouting different stats to improve. Niles focused on the fight.
And then, finally, it was his turn.
With a clean, practiced thrust of his spear, Niles skewered a goblin.
[You’ve defeated a goblin – You’ve received 18 EXP.]
[Level increased: 9 → 10. Please select which stats to increase.]
A glowing screen flickered into view.
[Name: Niles]
If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
[Level: 10]
[Strength: 7 → ?]
[Speed: 2 → ?]
[Stamina: 2 → ?]
[Magic: 1 → ?]
[Spirit: 1 → ?]
Niles didn’t hesitate. “Strength.”
[Strength increased by 1.]
But then—another prompt appeared.
This one was different.
Instead of its usual blue hue, the upgrade window gleamed in radiant gold.
[Please select which upgrade you want for Barrier-ish.]
- [Double Stats: Every time you level up inside of Niceland, gain an additional stat.]
- [Relocate: The barrier will follow you wherever you go until you choose where to place it. No walls or traps may hinder your movement.]
- [Sharing Is Caring: The barrier can absorb three skills from allies. These skills become usable by everyone inside Niceland but are permanently lost by the original user.]
Niles’ heart pounded.
“Holy—this has to be something special since it’s shining in gold.”
He read each option carefully. Double Stats was an obvious power boost—rapid growth could make them unstoppable—if they level up from inside the barrier. Relocate was a tactical dream; if King Xerxes were here, he’d demand that one on the spot. And then there was the last option—Sharing Is Caring.
His gut screamed at him to take Double Stats—who wouldn’t? But then, he thought back to Earth. To everything he lost.
To everything he might never have again.
The odds were slim. Maybe nothing would come of it.
But he had to take the risk.
He made his decision.
“Sharing Is Caring!”
[Selection acknowledged. Sharing Is Caring locked in.]
A second message popped up.
[Spike: You’ve reached level 10. You’ll feel an additional surge in power.]
A pulse of energy rippled through Niles’ body. Small, but noticeable. His muscles tensed with newfound strength.
No time to dwell on it—he turned back to the fight.
Vulcan leveled up at a blistering pace. Finn bellowed “Strength!” after every level-up, and Winston echoed him like a broken record, pumping all his growth into raw power. Their group was evolving rapidly, cutting down monster after monster, turning the battlefield into a blood-soaked graveyard.
Meanwhile, Tesla just lay there, still paralyzed.
Niles swept forward, his spear striking like a serpent. He finished off wounded monsters trying to crawl away, some escaping a few desperate steps before collapsing from blood loss. Then, an orc charged him.
Niles lunged.
His spear punched through its skull with a sickening crunch. The beast crumpled.
[You’ve defeated an orc – You’ve received 158 EXP.]
[Level increased: 10 → 11. Please select which stats to increase.]
“Strength,” Niles said without hesitation.
[Strength increased by 1.]
A grin spread across his face. “Come on! Give me something good!”
[Please select which upgrade you want for Barrier-ish.]
- [Capacity 1: Increase the maximum number of people inside Niceland to 100.]
- [Size Matters 2: Expand Barrier-ish by 100,000 m2.]
- [Translation: Allows you to understand most languages inside Niceland.]
This was a no-brainer.
“Translation!” he declared.
[Selection acknowledged. Translation locked in.]
Then—
BOOM.
A thunderous roar shook the battlefield as Big Bonker—the towering beast wielding an oversized stone hammer—smashed his weapon into the barrier.
The force rippled through Niceland, but the barrier held firm.
Niles and his party continued their slaughter. Shouts of “Strength!” and other stat upgrades filled the air. Wolf played along with Lina’s ruse, pretending to channel energy into her while she "strained" to maintain the barrier.
Bodies piled up.
Goblins, kobolds, a handful of orcs—Niles cut through them all. He ignored the larger beasts for now, focusing on racking up kills.
Then, another level-up.
“Strength.”
[Strength increased by 1.]
And with that—
[Spike Strength: Your Strength has reached level 10. You’ll feel a boost.]
A faint red glow pulsed around Niles before vanishing.
His whole body hummed with power. His muscles felt more defined, his movements lighter yet stronger.
He threw his arms in the air. “FINALLY!”
And then—
Another upgrade prompt.
Niles’ eyes gleamed. “Ohhh, now this is interesting…”
[Please select which upgrade you want for Barrier-ish.]
- [Random Passive: Gain a random new passive ability inside Niceland.]
- [Random Upgrade: One of your current upgrades will be enhanced.]
- [Random Building: Receive a new random building in Niceland.]
Niles’ excitement erupted into a triumphant, “HALLELUJAH!” He was ecstatic, arms raised to the heavens.
“THE GODS LOVE ME!” he shouted, spinning to see his friends still racking up experience points. “IT DOESN’T GET BETTER THAN THIS! WE’RE INVINCIBLE!”
He burst into laughter, the kind of laugh that belonged to a man who had just won the lottery, the kind that said, I have the golden ticket, and the world is mine.
“IT’S ALMOST TOO EASY!” he declared, grinning like a madman.
Then, without hesitation— “Random upgrade!”
[Selection acknowledged. Random upgrade locked in.]
[Host has been upgraded. You are now able to fully customize a person's or groups statuses.]
The status window vanished.
Niles blinked.
Fully customize? His fingers twitched with anticipation. He had to check this out, to dive into the host protocol and see what kind of insane power he’d just unlocked—
Then—
“NILES!”
Winston’s voice cut through the battlefield, urgent, panicked.
“LEVEL 118 IS ABOVE YOU!”
Niles’ head snapped around.
“...What does he mean?”
Winston shouted again. “ABOVE YOU!”
Niles furrowed his brows. “What?”
And then—his guest protocol flared open beside him.
A new request.
A name.
Pridecula.
Niles read it aloud, snorting. “Pridecula? What kind of stupid name is tha—”
His words died in his throat.
A shadowless figure hovered high above him, suspended in the night sky.
Its wings—long and bat-like—were a deep, unnatural purple. Its skin was a sickly, deathly blue, stretched tightly over lean, powerful muscles. White hair framed its face, and its eyes—deep, old-wine red—dripped with hunger.
The being’s tight-fitting clothes clung to its form, but there was no warmth in its appearance. No humanity.
It raised a fist—effortlessly, almost casually—before slamming it against the barrier.
BOOM.
The entire barrier shuddered.
Niles staggered, nearly losing his balance. “What the hell is that?!”
The creature peered down at him, studying him, as if peering through him. Then, in a voice smooth and deliberate, it asked—
“May I come in?”
Niles blinked.
He slammed DENY on his host protocol so fast his finger nearly broke.
“No! You stay outside!” he shouted.
The being exhaled softly, tapping a single clawed finger against the barrier.
Knock. Knock.
"Perhaps... it is not magic, but a skill,” it murmured, tilting its head.
Its eyes swept over Niles’ group.
“But none of you seem powerful enough to wield such a skill.”
Niles didn’t say a word.
Then—
From below, the chimera attacked.
It leaped toward the winged intruder, its serpent tail snapping forward to strike.
The being didn’t even flinch.
SNAP.
With a lazy motion, it caught the snake’s head mid-air.
Then it squeezed.
The serpent tail exploded in a shower of blood and bone.
The chimera let out a guttural, wounded whimper—then bolted, disappearing into the chaos.
Niles winced. Well, that’s not good.
Then—
Big Bonker stepped forward.
The massive minotaur let out a ground-shaking roar, raising his enormous stone hammer.
“YEAH! SHOW HIM WHO’S BOSS, BIG BONKER!” Niles whooped, praying the problem would just... sort itself out.
Big Bonker swung with all his might—
But the being vanished.
Then—before anyone could react—
It reappeared above Big Bonker’s head.
And then it kicked.
A single, bone-crunching strike.
Big Bonker fell like a ragdoll, crashing into the ground with a sickening THUD.
Niles screamed, “BIG BONKER! NO!”
The minotaur groaned, staggering, barely able to stand.
“COME BACK! YOU CAN DO IT! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!” Niles yelled, as if sheer encouragement could reverse the reality of what just happened.
But then—the rest of the monster army turned.
Their eyes locked onto the airborne figure, its dark silhouette bathed in eerie moonlight.
The battlefield fell silent.
Then—
The monsters shivered.
One by one, they took a step back.
Even the mindless beasts understood.
They were no longer the hunters.
They were the prey.
The winged being drifted back toward the barrier, its movements slow and deliberate, until it was close—too close—to Niles.
Once again, it asked, “May I come in?”
Niles’ guest protocol flared open.
His finger hovered over the option for a split second before he slammed DENY once again.
“No. Stay out.” He waved a hand dismissively. “Stranger danger. My gut tells me you’re bad news.”
The being tilted its head, considering him. Then, in a voice as soft as silk, it murmured—
“I wonder how your guts taste.”
Niles blinked. “...What? They’re not on the menu!”
The being continued, almost dreamily, as if speaking to itself. “We rarely receive guests.”
Then—once again— “May I come in?”
Niles’ patience snapped.
“Didn’t you hear me the first two times?! I clearly said—”
But before he could finish, the being mused aloud, “Perhaps it works differently if I try this.”
Niles scoffed. “Don’t bother. You’re no match for my barrier. It’s impenetra—”
FWIP.
The being shifted—its form shrinking, limbs folding inward, flesh twisting—until where it once hovered, a large bat now flapped its wings.
Then—effortlessly—the bat fluttered through the barrier.
Niles' words withered in his throat.
“...—ble.”
His stomach dropped.
He watched in pure horror as the creature breached his impenetrable defenses.
“Well… okay,” Niles began weakly, already trying to rationalize the situation. “B-But the moment you transform back, I’m sure the barrier will—”
Before he could finish, the bat shifted back into its humanoid form, standing there completely unbothered.
The barrier didn’t toss it out.
It didn’t even register it as an intruder or person anymore.
Niles' heart sank.
“...Throw you out.” He blinked hard. “Welp. That’s a new fear unlocked.”
The being slowly descended, landing with a graceful, unnatural ease.
As its feet touched the ground, its wings fractured like glass—shards breaking apart, then dissolving into thin smoke.
Its gaze met Niles’.
“How are you able to understand me?”
Niles just… paled.
Behind him, Felix, Winston, Vulcan, Finn, Lina— all of them screamed.
“NILES, LOOK OUT!”
But not Wolf.
Wolf charged.
His sword drew a silver arc through the air, aimed directly at the intruder’s throat.
The being didn’t even flinch.
Two fingers caught the blade mid-swing.
CLANG.
Metal screeched in protest, halted as if Wolf had just swung against a mountain.
The being sighed.
“Can’t you see we’re talking?”
Then—without effort—it drove a vicious kick into Wolf’s gut.
BOOM.
Wolf launched backward, his armored body hurtling across the battlefield before crashing against the far side of the barrier.
Unmoving.
Unconscious? Injured? Dead?
Niles couldn’t tell.
But the roar that followed told him someone else could.
“SON!”
Vulcan bolted forward, his massive frame rushing toward Wolf, grief and fury crackling off him like thunder.
The being, meanwhile, ran a lazy hand through its white hair, scratching idly at its scalp.
Then, as if nothing had happened, it turned back to Niles.
“Who are you?”
Niles swallowed, his soul already halfway out of his trembling body.
“Niles,” he croaked.
The being’s red eyes gleamed.
“Why are you here?”
Niles opened his mouth—then shut it.
He had no idea where to begin. No idea how much truth to give. His mind scrambled for an answer that wouldn’t get them killed.
Before he could find one, his party rushed in, weapons drawn.
“WAIT!” Niles shot out his hands. “Don’t engage him! He’s too strong!”
The being’s gaze flickered over each of them, scanning their faces with low interest.
Niles inhaled sharply. Then—against every instinct screaming at him to run—
He lowered his head.
Bowed.
And, in the most formal voice he could muster, he said—
“Please excuse us for our manners.”
The being’s gaze settled on Niles, its crimson eyes gleaming with something ancient and unreadable. It had no patience for small talk.
“What are you doing here?”
A shudder crawled up Niles’ spine—goosebumps, but not the good kind.
“We… were… banished.”
The being cut him off. “I don’t care about your reason. I’m asking about your cause.”
Niles swallowed, his throat dry. “To… conquer… the Monster Island.”
For a long, heavy moment, the being said nothing.
Then, with a flicker of movement— BOOM.
A force slammed outward from the being, a crushing pressure that sent Niles and everyone around him crashing to their knees.
“Why?”
The word rang in Niles’ skull, reverberating like a drum inside his bones.
Sweat beaded down his face.
The being took a slow step forward. Then another. Each inch it closed between them peeled back the mask, revealing the true, unbearable horror lurking behind its form.
Niles couldn’t move.
The being reached out—and took his hand.
Then—CRACK.
Niles’ little finger bent the wrong way.
The pain was instant.
His stomach lurched, vision going white at the edges.
“Well?” the being murmured.
Niles sucked in a sharp breath, forcing the words out between clenched teeth.
“F-For selfish reasons,” he admitted. “I wanted to know what it felt like to pretend to be a king. My goal… my long-time goal… is to build a family while keeping my friends happy.”
The being nodded.
“How noble of you,” it said—then grabbed the next finger and twisted.
SNAP.
Felix lurched forward to intervene—
But then the being turned its gaze to him.
A look so devoid of warmth, so absolute in its dominance, that Felix froze where he stood.
Niles gasped through the pain. “Don’t.” His voice was hoarse. “I’m fine.”
The being tilted its head.
“Really?”
SNAP.
A scream tore from Niles’ throat, but the being refused to release his hand.
“You’re only alive because I allow you to breathe,” the being murmured, its voice a whisper against Niles’ ear.
Niles’ breath hitched.
“I’m sorry,” he gasped. “Please forgive me. We didn’t know this place belonged to you.”
The being stared at him for a long, agonizing moment.
Then, as if bored, it played with Niles’ fourth finger—rolling it back and forth like a twig about to be snapped in half.
“Not enough.”
Its voice was quiet, almost affectionate.
“Everything in this world belongs to me.”
SNAP.
Niles gritted his teeth, a strangled groan escaping through the cracks.
He forced out the words, “Of course.”
Then, suddenly—
The being sniffed.
Its nostrils flared as it inhaled deeply, its head turning, searching.
Then its gaze locked onto Wolf’s unmoving form.
Its eyes narrowed.
“What is that wonderful scent?”
A slow, eerie smile curled across its lips.
“Fresh blood.”
It took a step toward Wolf—
Niles’ pulse spiked. No. No, no, no.
“WAIT!”
The being halted, flicking its gaze back to him.
Niles forced himself to bow, buying time.
“Would you mind telling me who you are?”
The being’s smile vanished.
For a moment, it simply stared.
Then, with lethal casualness, it raised a single finger—
BANG.
A blast ripped through the air like a gunshot—
And Niles’ shoulder dislocated.
The pain was so sudden, so all-consuming, that Niles barely registered his own scream.
His knees buckled.
“Please… have mercy on us…”
The being gave no reply.
Just silence.
It didn’t need to say anything. Sharing the same space as mortals was already an insult.
It turned again, intent on closing in on Wolf.
Niles couldn’t let that happen.
He forced himself up.
His body screamed at him. He was shaking. Dizzy.
But he stood.
And he called out—
“Pridecula.”
The being stopped.
A slow, unnatural turn.
Its lips peeled back, revealing slightly elongated fangs.
“How do you know my name?”
A dangerous, low rumble.
Niles’ lips curled into the weakest, most pain-ridden smile of his life.
“We’re not done talking yet.”
The being—Pridecula—scoffed.
But he turned.
He raised his finger once more—
Another BANG
A new blast punching through the air like an heavy uppercut. This time aimed at Niles stomach.
He threw up and coughed violently.
“Mortal” he said, the word dripped with contempt as the being walked back to Niles.
"Tell me what you know".
