Ch 3

Hurtling towards a planet at supersonic speed has never been on my bucket list but it sure is an experience. As we get closer and closer to the Eastern Continent I start to see the larger landmasses reveal themselves from the dense fog, a small mountain range here, a large lake there, and three absolutely ginormous black towers evenly spaced apart from each other.

Each of these towers seems to distort the air around them to an unholy beat. It's almost like these towers are alive. I wonder if they are the endgame for this continent. Battle towers seem like a cool concept.

Tearing my eyes away from the monoliths of wrongness I am now aware of how very close I am to the ground. Directly below me is what appears to be a somewhat smallish city. It looks circular in nature with what appear from the top to be 3 main rings of city, each one noticeably smaller in diameter as you get to the center of the city. The largest is filled with homes and inns of all shapes and sizes most likely the common folk live here. The next ring has bigger buildings then the outer ring with more space between the buildings, less crowded. The final ring contains only a smattering of buildings and what can only be described as an actual castle in the center and as I start getting closer to my target starting city I can see guards on patrol of the castles walls and each of the rings. The energy zipping me across the land seems to emanate a comforting feeling to me, almost to say 'don't worry, you won't be harmed'. I take in what seems to be my target as the rays of light encompassing me stretch out and pass into the skylight of this massive cathedral in the outermost ring.

The cathedral itself is easily the biggest building in the outer-ring, save for what appear to be warehouses near the edge of the city, its massive domed stained glass ceiling sparkles when the radiant light from my transportation touches it. I take a breath as I start to slow down until I am in the cathedral, standing upon a stone pedestal with a giant of a man clasps his prayer beads and bows towards me.

"Welcome, Immortal to the Eastern Continent. I am known as Father Jonathan." Father Jonathan was a mountain of a man, easily standing at six foot five, he towers over me in priestly garb with a jovial smile on his face.

Definitely a friendly giant vibe. Before answering him I take a minute to look around and admire the stained glass dome, each panel being a scene to the same story. I wonder if the lore from the game will have any real significance on the gameplay, I mean I wouldn't put it past them to include a lot of fun stuff to find in the real world based on the historical texts here. I am interrupted in my musings by Father Jonathan giving a polite cough.

"May this humble servant of the light know how to address you?" When he says that a popup appears in my face

"Yes of course where are my manners, you may call me Trix MoonBright." might as well use my handle I use for every other fantasy game.

I wait a beat before seeing Father Jonathan is simply smiling and waiting for me to select my answer before moving on.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

"Welcome Trix. I must say it is such a relief to hear a name from an Immortal that is normal and not some weird contrived sequence of letters. I mean, what even is xxXDoomScrollEntusiastXxx? How is that a name? " Father Jonathan sighed before moving on "Anyways, welcome to the town of EdgeWater. The gods have given us information in advance that great Immortal heroes would be summoned to our lands in order to help fight the powers of the dark. It is my job to guide you new heroes to ensure you are as prepared as possible before starting your adventure. First things first though, every new Hero has been given a divine blessing granting them increased capabilities. Which Blessing were you bestowed?"

Is he talking about my trait or oh, duh, the focus we got to pick at the start.

"I have been gifted the Focus of Magic"

"Ah I see, while I am not a full practitioner of the magical arts I dabble enough to know that boon will take you far in this world. Now, what is it that you would like to do with your magic? Throw fireballs or lighting strikes at your foes, shield your allies from harm or heal them afterwards? Maybe you want to use magic to explore the unknown, discover secrets that were lost to time? The choice is yours." With that speech Father Jonathan waves his hand and a new screen appears before me.

Elemental- Those who wish to command the Four Primary Elements. Fire to burn, Earth to crush, Water to drown, and Air to extinguish.

Mental- Others see this as a taboo to use amongst the more intelligent of races, though the effects could be quite astounding.

Summoning- For those who wish to delve into the art of creating the perfect weapon, whether it being alive or composed of the elements.

Dark- The darkness is known to be an effective tool when in the right hands. While not evil, it is known that those who use the dark are able to mimic the effects of death; slow, inevitable, and irreversible.

Light- Some say the light heals. Others say it is a way for those to defend others. But everyone knows that light is able to purify anything that it touches.

Nature- In its purest form, those who walk this path tread closely with the Fauna and Flora of the world. They are able to connect to it like no other.

Research- For those who simply cannot stand not knowing how or why something was created or cast, this sub-specialization helps those who wish to further their understanding of the very nature of magic.

Scrying- For those who wish to see what normally could not be seen.

That, is a lot of options.
