Gaia’s own biological family saw and treated her as a slave, but she didn’t see or treat James as one. It was the opposite: she supported what made him happy. The only difference was that James reciprocated what she gave to him. She saw herself as the person that was responsible for him. He saw her as the kind of person he wanted to be.
The source of maternal love came from Gina, not Eva. Eva acted more like a competitive sister/friend than a mother to her own kids. Gaia used what she knew of love (what Gina showed her) and applied it to James. Gaia always had it in her, it just had to be brought out by the right person who was capable of it. Gina loved Gaia like a daughter. Gaia loved Gina like a mother. Gaia loved James the way a mother is supposed to love her own child.
