Mal is the male version of Eva. He does not want Gaia to succeed, be happy, or move on. If Eva can’t control Gaia, Mal will try to. With a dad like Mel and a mom like Eva, he is the perfect person to make her believe that she’s destined to be miserable since he’s the best she could do. She’s not good enough for him.

  Mal is a karmic (demon) who treated her like shit in the past like Eva, but is back to do the same thing. He didn’t learn his lesson before just so he can come back and do the same shit again and get away with it. Rinse, repeat. Same negative cycle. Since Gaia has a history with Mal, he feels familiar to her, and the sexual attraction is strong. She believes he’s her other half. Even though he knows he’s not, he is milking her belief for as long as he can.
