Chapter 17: duty calls

  As soon as I arrived in Florida, they wanted me to part with every ounce of fairy dust I had. But unfortunately that wasn't all they wanted from me.

  They then made me attend a briefing, intended to bring me up to speed.

  The President had apparently approved a request from the military to bomb a bug stone in Antarctica. I explicitly warned them not to do that....but they still couldn't resist blowing the thing up. They used my own fairy dust for that, which pissed me off even more.

  But at least they promised me that they would never repeat such an attack. Let's just say that 5% of Antarctica isn't covered in snow and ice anymore.....for the next century. It was like a huge nuke... but thankfully no radiation. They're spreading the word to the other nations, so hopefully nobody will be tempted to try this again.

  They gave me about two dozen crystals for me to absorb, probably to help brighten my mood. So far no new skills, only more power, more venom, more fairy dust.

  The next topic was about 'informing' me about the pce where they would be sending me next. And no, it was not home.

  Satellites have identified a huge bug in Japan, and the people in charge have thus charmingly named it Godzil. I'm not kidding, it's the official designation for the thing from hell. And since this monster is a serious threat to all countries, it has to be dealt with as soon as possible.

  They want this poor fairy to travel to Japan and somehow terminate the monster together with the armed forces. But....there's one problem....they need me to attack the thing, since the Japanese don't have the time to create a weapon from a fresh batch of my fairy dust.

  When they showed me pictures of my target, I almost fainted. I thought that it was big, but I was wrong...very wrong. It is absolutely ginormous .... about half the size of the Empire State building.The thing appeared out of nowhere in the Pacific, east from Tokyo, and is now heading north. It set foot on nd briefly, but retreated to the ocean after being hit by lots of firepower. It is now expected to make ndfall in Hokkaido, in the northernmost part of the country. It is equipped with shields, so it's still unclear why the monster decided to withdraw. For now it is assumed that it simply got fed up with the fireworks.

  In order to get there, I will have to join the crew of an F14 fighter jet. It is a 2-seater, so I'll be spending my time aboard in my tiny form so I won't hinder normal operations for them.

  If I'm not mistaken, the F14 is no longer in use in my world, but apparently they are still needed in this one. Our destination is Aomori, Japan, where a helicopter will then take me to the danger zone. The F14 will fly using afterburners and will be refueled in the air a few times, and once by nding on an aircraft carrier. The flight will take several hours, but it's still much faster than any commercial flight.

  It is already dark when I arrive at the Jacksonville International Airport, where the F14 and its crew are waiting for me. It's obviously not a military airport, but this area has been evacuated completely, meaning that the military runs the pce now.

  I am exhausted, nervous and afraid of what is waiting for me. And worst of all, they wouldn't let me call my mom. They promised to tell her that I was needed in Japan, but nothing more.

  Before changing into my smaller form, they gave me a headset and my transponder so that I would appear on everyone's radar as a friendly. The headset should be able to hear my voice, even when I'm invisible due to the recent experiments.

  When I changed into my smaller form, we were all pleased to learn that the equipment was miniaturized as well, meaning that I'm now carrying the world's smallest transponder.

  The flight went well, but I didn't get much sleep since the pilot needed to use the radio often. Seeing the pne being refuelled in mid-air was very impressive, but the flight itself was long and boring. At least I got to sleep between the refuelings.

  I was very happy to leave the pne and quickly changed into my fox-form. I thanked the crew and was then quickly guided to a building where I enjoyed a vegetarian meal.

  I know a tiny bit about Japanese nguage and culture, so I hoped that I wouldn't sound like a tourist to them. It however became very obvious to everyone that I had no issues speaking Japanese whatsoever....thanks to my nguage skill.

  After using the restroom, I was guided to a military helicopter.

  [ early morning, Japan time, Misawa airport ]

  I'm currently being helped into the helicopter and am grateful that my headset once more protects me from the loud noise. Unfortunately the thing isn't pying nice with the Japanese equipment, so they're working on it.

  "Defender Finley, can you understand me now?" A military officer asked onboard the helicopter.

  "Yes! Loud and clear!"

  "Excellent. Maybe you already heard this, but welcome to Japan and thank you very much for helping us out."

  "Thank you very much, and I'll do my best. I got quite the welcome already, so I'm ready to do my job. My name is Ann, so please keep it simple."

  "Of course, I'm Major Kurosawa, nice to meet you, Ann."

  We exchanged polite greetings, and I bowed to him as well, which was the least I could do.

  He told me that the monster had changed course while I was traveling to Japan, and is now heading to the coast near Misawa ...meaning that the monster is basically heading straight for us now. That makes this flight a very short one, and hopefully we'll get to see a glimpse of the beast sooner rather than ter.

  A state of emergency is in effect, but it's impossible to evacuate the whole east coast. Train services have been suspended and they even grounded all aircraft in Japan.

  We discussed a few ground rules, just to be clear, like I'm now reporting to him for the duration of this mission. He also told me that we are supposed to cooperate, so fighter jets and such are standing by.This is a team effort, and I couldn't agree more. There's no way in hell that I can kill such a beast all by myself!

  A few minutes ter we nded on a very deserted beach. The Major departed again, following my progress remotely from the helicopter.

  There are military vehicles nearby as well, but I'm definitely at the front.

  From a nearby city I hear the sound of sirens and messages to seek shelter and evacuate this area. I felt another shiver, but I don't have time for that.

  I make my way towards the ocean and start flying higher and higher, and then activate my transponder.

  "Ann, this is Major Kurosawa. This frequency is reserved for us, can you hear me?"

  "Yes, Major. Is my transponder working?"

  "Confirmed, the transponder is working. The monster has changed course again and is heading north again towards Hokkaido."

  "Is it still nearby?"

  "Confirmed, its head is barely visible above the waves."

  "Do you want me to lure it here, or let it move north?"

  "Your current position is best for our long range assets. Can you lure it here?"

  "Confirmed, I will lure it here. Please guide me to the coordinates." I start flying towards the ocean, waiting for directions. This is so creepy.....there's nothing but ocean below me, but at least there's plenty of sunlight left today, since it's early in the day.

  "Ann.... straight ahead, current speed 5 minutes."

  "Increasing speed.....oh my god....I have a visual on the target."

  I'm not activating my Concealment, since that monster can see me anyway. I also need the military to see me at all times.

  "Copy that, describe what you see."

  "It's head is massive and its chin is barely above the surface. It's green and its head resembles a dinosaur. Otherwise no info, still too far."

  "Copy that. Please try to..."

  But I interrupted him. "Negative, target has spotted me. It's changing course. I am holding position."

  "Copy that."

  "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" The loudest sound ever just hit my ears.

  "My god....that thing is pissed off. Definitely heading to me now." What is wrong with those monsters? They are always surprised to see me, or maybe just curious?

  After another minute I'm already above nd, waiting for the monster to arrive. But then it happened.....its feet found solid ground below the waves and started to climb.....it's freakin' huuuuuuge!

  "We have a visual on the target. Artillery and long range missiles standing by. Start dumping your dust."

  "Unable to comply. Target must be on nd for this to work. Please advise."

  "Confirmed....wait until ndfall. Fire at will."

  My orders are pin and simple. I have to deposit lots of dust onto the target, but that will only work once it has made ndfall. Dumping dust while surrounded by water may not be effective.

  As soon as I give the signal, I have to rush away or be bombed, shot at and targeted from all angles by whatever explosive toys they have come up with tely. Apparently they brought the big guns for this one, but they promised that nukes weren't on the menu today.

  There's also a US submarine nearby, I mean AS, not US..of course....and it will fire Tomahawks as soon as I give the order. Tomahawks are long range missiles, capable of hitting a target fast and accurately.

  So here I am, waiting for a real monster to approach me. I feel the gentle ocean breeze, which is a bit chilly, but thankfully the weather is nice, so no compints. Imagine if it were raining, snowing, or worse...thunderstorms. Nah....just a nice day and everything a girl could ever want...except for the fact that her life might end in a few minutes.

  It's slowly getting taller as it climbs towards the beach. It's more like a freaking T-Rex-dinosaur than Godzil. But still.....why are monsters so obsessed with me? Can they sense that I'm a threat to them?

  "WAAAAAAA" again it taunts me, but then comes to a complete halt.

  A grin appears on my face and I decide to taunt it as well. I mean, how else am I going to get it all the way here onto nd?

  I want to shout as loud as I can, but feel a primordial urge to scare it."AAAWOOOOOOOOOOO." It sounded more like a wolf howling, but my cry was so unbelievably loud that I surprised myself.

  "Ann...was that you?"

  "Yes.... surprisingly. The monster stopped moving....but now it seems determined to get to me again."

  "Understood. All nearby cities have been completely evacuated. Use the space if you have to, but try to minimize damage."

  "Yeah.....that's not gonna be easy, but I'll try."

  "Copy that. Are you nervous?"

  "Yes, sir."

  "Good, it means that you are focused. When you're over confident, you will get yourself killed. Let's go over your objectives again. Fly above the target. Release your fairy dust....all of it. Once you're done, get the hell out of there. Remember, we can see you on the radar, but we still want to hear you give the order. As soon as you're out of fairy dust.....you will say GO GO GO. Are these instructions clear to you?"

  "Crystal clear, sir."

  "Good. The target is moving into range of our artillery now. Long range strikes are ready and we have a satellite fix on the monster as well. Send it to hell, Defender!"

  "Sir, yes, sir!"

  "That's what I want to hear! The monster is almost completely on nd now."

  "Understood, sir. I can confirm the same."

  "Copy that. Your attack will start in one minute. T minus 60 seconds. Starting countdown for attack"

  Someone below me, next to the military vehicles, is using a megaphone to count down to zero."60.......59......."

  I'm really nervous. Will my dust work on this thing? Will I be fast enough?

  "48.....47...."

  I'm still hovering, warming up my wings while slowly increasing my altitude. I'm a lot taller than the st time I fought a monster, and I have 9 tails now. Worst case....I'll pump all my venom into it as well. Maybe the back of its head is the best spot for that?

  "32.....31...."

  But what if I'm flying much slower now with the headset on? Should I turn into my fairy form to make myself a smaller target?

  "23.....22..."

  No....I'm ready.....I can do this. I can always become tiny if needed. Let's test this new form to the max!"Activating...Concealment!" It can probably see me, but let's not take any chances.

  "10.......9.........8..........7.........6..........5..........4..........3..........2..........1..........GO!"

  I unch towards the target, hoping that all military units can see me moving.

  I'm faster...definitely much faster than when I was a tiny fairy. This Fox-form is really, really fast! But I still hope that the creature won't notice me with my Concealment activated!

  I'm flying higher and higher.

  "Roaaaaaaaaa." The taunt was very loud, and the monster so far seems absolutely focused on me.

  I see it walking on nd now, meaning that I can start my attack. I see the ground shaking with every step it takes....this thing is huuuuuuuuge!

  My altitude is still increasing until I'm far above it. There's much more wind at this altitude, but thankfully there are no flying monsters nearby.

  Remember, Ann...just drop the dust and leave. No heroics...just do what you're told to do. Mmm.....but I can sense a nice crystal inside.....no! Just the fairy dust...nothing more. Lives are at stake here!

  I'm almost there, trying to approach the creature from above and behind. But unfortunately it stops and repositions itself, facing me!

  "Oh crap. It really, really sees me!" I accidentally said that out loud.

  "Calm down, you got this."

  "Radio silence! I need to talk to myself to make this work. Trust me. Shields on!" I said, and didn't hear another word.

  It keeps tracking me, while I'm flying in a rge circle around it. You know what, I already pyed this waiting game before. I'm increasing altitude again and see it far below me. It doesn't seem to have wings, nor does it seem capable of jumping this high.

  But then the damn monster zapped me!"AAAAAAAAHHHH!" I cried out from pain.

  If I had forgotten to activate my shield, I would have been dead right now! But now I'm spiraling down towards the beach, feeling pain everywhere. Thankfully I was high enough to change course and fly up again.

  "Major? Major....can you hear me?"

  Oh crap....the damn thing destroyed my radio....and probably my transponder too!"They better not start shooting me!"

  I look towards the city and still see a few military units waiting there, so I will have to rey my messages there.

  A few seconds ter I almost got a heart attack when I saw a drone flying next to me. "For god's sake...can you hear me? No? Then get the hell out of here!" At least they know that I'm still alive. I'm gesturing wildly to buzz off and it thankfully does. Who decided that it was a good idea to distract me?!

  I remove my headset and transponder, letting them simply fall down towards the beach. They are of no use to me anymore.

  This time I'm flying much higher above the monster and continuously changing my course, to avoid being zapped again. Always flying over its back, so that it keeps repositioning itself.

  "Fairy dust!" I shout, and sure enough an enormous green snowstorm is unleashed at the target below me.

  "Roaaaaaaaaaa Raaaaaaaaa!!!!" Its shield is weakening and lightning bolts appear, just like st time.

  That's it...I'm out of dust!

  I rush down towards the military units and become visible, and soon hear someone talking to me through a megafone. It seems that we had the same idea. "Get down here! We have a GO GO GO."

  I hear lots of explosions behind me and when I look back, I see the monster being hit continuously. But so far it doesn't seem to be injured in the slightest.

  I nd next to the soldier and he immediately hands me a military radio. "Job well done. The Major wants to talk to you."

  "Yes, sir!" I shout, just because I have no idea what else to say.

  I hear the Major on the radio. "Ann? Are you listening?"

  "Major! We have a GO GO GO." Let's repeat, just for the sake of it.

  "Confirmed, order has been given. Status report."

  "Godzil zapped me, killing my radio. It hurt for a moment, but I'm unharmed."

  "Copy that. Take the radio and fly up again, it's heading innd. Lure it back to the beach where we can hit it. Weapons fire will cease now."

  "Sir, yes, sir!"

  This time I won't even bother becoming invisible.

  The creature is still roaring, and seems eager to attack me! Oh crap....it's definitely still heading towards the city.

  "This is Ann! Godzil won't follow me! Need instructions!"

  "Standby! We're preparing the Tomahawks!"

  "Copy that."

  I'm flying towards it at a high altitude, in a desperate attempt to make it follow me. But it simply walks through the city, destroying absolutely everything in its wake.

  "Okay....you zapped me....I'll zap you. ZAP!"

  I felt a massive power drain in my body, but the creature definitely felt it!

  "ROAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!"

  Oh crap......it's pissed off again, and reversed course, now following me again!

  Remembering its ability to zap me, I fly as fast away from it as I can...towards the ocean.

  "Major.....now would be a good moment to HEEEEEELP."

  "Ann, copy that. Keep flying in your current heading. Tomahawks are underway, all other friendlies are on hold. Repeat Tomahawks inbound, increase your altitude."

  "Copy that. Tomahawks inbound. Increasing altitude. Crap...crap. CRAAAAAP! It's gaining speed!"

  I managed to lure it back, but now it's gaining speed. It's catching up with me! I increase altitude further, but my wings are starting to hurt. Not only from the continued use, but also, because this seems to be the maximum designed altitude for them.

  "Ann here, Godzil is still catching up. I cannot fly higher. Repeat: maximum altitude reached, monster is faster than me."

  "Tomahawks entering battlezone. 30 seconds before impact. You are too close to the target."

  "I KNOW! I'm not superman! Give me advice! My shields are on, but I don't know if they can deal with freakin' missiles!"

  "Copy that. Wait for 10 seconds, then descend rapidly, thus increasing speed."

  "Copy that. Waiting."

  "Now!"

  "Wilco." They taught me all sorts of codes, and this one means that I will comply.

  I put my arms close to my body to make myself as aerodynamic as I can. And yes.....falling actually seems to be increasing my speed. I can even feel my wings folding, just like they did in the pool.

  I can't look back at the monster, or my head will act as a brake.

  "Tomahawks inbound, beware of bst. 5.....4.....3.....2......1...."

  "BABOOOOOM"

  "BABOOOOOM"

  "BABOOOOOM"

  "BABOOOOOM"

  Not one, not two, but 4 missiles just hit the target, creating one heck of a shockwave, throwing me high up into the sky, far above my wings' ability to fly. I feel the enormous heat from the explosions and I'm unable to fly against the strong winds.

  I'm not sure what happened next, because I couldn't breathe anymore.

  [ 2 days ter - evening ]

  "Beep......Beep......Beep......Beep......Beep......Beep......Beep......Beep."

  I wake up from an annoying beep, which seems to be increasing in frequency.

  "Beep..Beep..Beep..Beep..Beep..Beep..Beep..Beep"

  I see someone entering this dark room and the lights go on, blinding me for a moment. The beeping sound stops shortly after.

  "What.....where?" I tried to speak, but my throat is dry.

  "Shhh....you're okay. We had to perform surgery, but you'll be okay." She's probably a nurse, and she's wearing an AS uniform.

  This appears to be a hospital room. So I'm not being treated by a field medic apparently. "What..?" What happened to me?

  "Easy now, the Major will tell you everything. Take a moment to wake up first. We kept you sedated for two days." She brings me a gss of water. "Drink this, it's only water and it will help you feel better."

  She puts a pillow behind my back and helps me drink."Ouch.....my back hurts!"

  "Yes....just a minute okay? Drink the water now."

  "Thank you....I needed that. Oh nooo....... My wings! I can't feel them!"

  "Shhh.....just a minute. You are not in any danger." She forced a smile and tried to help me calm down, but it didn't work.

  "Tell me! Are they gone?!" I shouted.

  She closes her eyelids for a moment."Yes. But you'll be fine!"

  "Nooooooo!!!!"

  I see more medical staff rushing into the room and someone injects me with something. Suddenly my thoughts are getting ....very.....slow.

  A few minutes ter I see Major Reese entering the room wearing a dress uniform. I remember dad telling me that they hate to wear that, so he's probably here with bad news or needs to go somewhere else soon. But right now I think that he's wearing that out of respect for me.

  "Please, may we speak in private?" He asked, and medical staff moved to the other side of the room, but didn't leave the room at all.

  "Ann...how are you doing?"

  "Not good....I lost my wings." My thoughts are getting normal again, so whatever they injected into me, didn't st very long.

  "He nods. We say that same expression in the Air Force when a pilot has lost the right, or the ability to fly.

  You however have lost much more than that. Words cannot provide the comfort you need right now, but I bring you our nation's deepest sympathies for your loss. The President himself has heard about your injuries and sends his best wishes for a speedy recovery."

  "Nice words."

  "I know. But you should be aware of the fact that the creature was annihited. Your actions have saved the lives of countless innocent civilians."

  I ignore his remark. "You could have remotely detonated the Tomahawks and used another type of attack. Just saying." I don't care anymore...I feel miserable.

  "Yes, but the President has ordered us to continue the attack. He wants you to be aware of that fact and that those Tomahawks were fired from our sub. The Japanese had nothing to do with that."

  "I thought I liked him. Guess I was wrong. I won't be saving people anymore...ever again. Is he aware of that?"

  "He is very much aware of that, yes."

  "Such a cold decision. Just a pawn on the chessboard, nothing more.

  I just want to understand....WHY didn't he stop the Tomahawks? And why send 4 of them? Is this about the cost of those things?"

  "No. The creature quickly ran out of weapon's range. You may not have realized it, but you were flying at about 130 mph. Neither the Japanese nor us were prepared for that speed, since the creature never showed that kind of behavior before. We also weren't taking any risks and sent more than one Tomahawk...just in case. But the point is that it was about to return to the ocean. Time was up."

  "Oh.....I can see the logic in that. Thank you for having the courtesy to...tell the truth."

  "It's the least I can do, soldier."

  "I'm not a real soldier and you of course know that. I never had the training. Only an overzealous dad who kept preaching about military etiquette and different types of aircraft. Hell, I can even tie a Windsor knot!"

  He smiled. "Good to see you smile again. We're not giving up on you, Ann.

  In fact, we retrieved the monster's crystal. Even if you can't fight directly, we're still investing in you. Get stronger, and perhaps you can beat those things on ground level. You are still the best option we have."

  "You want to see if I can still make fairy dust, don't you?"

  "Astute as ever. Yes, that's my secondary objective today."

  "What's your primary?" I grinned.

  "To make you not quit being our Defender. Will you continue to serve your nation?" He looks serious, formal.

  But....I'm starting to cry.

  His expression softens. "It's alright. You have earned the right to cry. It never was a fair fight to begin with. But you beat Godzil and can still make a difference."

  " Does my mother know?"

  "Yes, she has been informed. She asked us to let her meet you here, but we had to refuse."

  "Oh....okay, I think I understand. So...where am I?" The view outside the window doesn't exactly tell me much.

  "A military hospital in Charlston, South Carolina."

  "Huh? Why there?"

  "Let me take you back to the incident first. When you fell out of the sky, you slowly rotated down to the ground, just like a helicopter does with a damaged rotor. In any case, we expect that your shield prevented you from dying up there.

  The medics said that they heard you screaming for your mother. After seeing that you were bleeding, they sedated you.

  While sedated, they performed surgery on you. First stabilizing you, then in a hospital proper surgery. We then brought you home, because we don't leave our people behind.

  This pce was chosen because.....these people are specialized in treating severe wounds, amputations...and....the psychological impact of that. We still need you, Ann."

  More tears are leaving my eyes. "There's nothing they can do for me."

  "That's what many have said before. Losing your wings is simir to losing a leg or an arm. It's difficult, and there's nothing we can do about that. Only giving our support, and telling you the truth...that we still need you."

  "I want to go home. Can I?"

  "Physically, yes. Mentally...not so sure."

  "I know that hitting a superior officer is a court-martiable offense, but right now I seem to be having memory issues....besides, I'm not even in the military."

  "Hahaha, if you can say that, I will have you back on the battlefield in no time."

  "So...more fights still to come?"

  "Not sure how many Godzil type monsters there are, but the fairy dust worked perfectly on its shields. But....the bug needed more than 4 Tomahawks to die. So, yes, we'll be counting on you."

  "You.....no way. More than 4 freakin' Tomahawks?"

  "Yes, 3 Japanese JSDF Apaches shot 1000 rounds each through its head, and only then did it stop moving. But thankfully the first attack prevented it from walking."

  "No shit... Be honest. Do you think that we'll be able to survive this? Win the war, I mean?"

  "We will, because our determination will pay off.

  We're hoping to recreate your fairy dust in the b, and the results so far look promising. But for now only your dust still works effectively. And if you can't provide the dust, we need you to ask the other fairies for help. When we die, they will die next."

  "Yeah....CRAP! ....Ouch!"

  "What happened?"

  "My leg hurts!"

  One of the medics must have been listening in on the conversation. So much for privacy."Careful now, your left leg was fractured, miss."

  "You could have told me that sooner! Sheesh!"

  "We had to inject a tranquilizer because you weren't exactly ready to hear that."

  "Anything else? Are my tails still there?"

  "No other injuries, all 9 tails are present and accounted for. We set your leg and put it in a cast."

  "Thank god."

  The medic lifts the bnket and shows me my left leg, all in white from my toes until my kneecap.

  "Thanks, doc." Well....barking at a medical officer won't do anyone any good. But still....this sucks!

  "You're welcome. And thank you for saving so many lives. It makes our job...bearable."

  "Yeah...right back at ya."

  I look at the Major again and can't suppress a ugh."So much for 'natural enemy of monsters' hahaha."

  "What do you mean?" He frowns.

  "It's a title I gained in my stats menu. You know, the skill list I have? Anyway....I don't exactly feel that the title was deserved."

  "I think it is. You are still new to all of this. Having weapons and using them effectively are 2 different matters. You still have to train more."

  "Yeah.....maybe."

  The Major then says "you seem ready to go home. I think you still need to talk to someone, but I can't force you. Perhaps you just need some time to rest."

  "Before we go, let me check my stats."

  "Your...ah..okay."

  "Yeah...that's new. I now have a damage report in a nice red font. 4 wings....all gone. One broken leg. One missing stinger."

  "Your stinger is missing?" The medic asked.

  "I'm only reading what it says here." I point at my stats, but of course he can't see them.

  "Amazing, a self diagnostic tool. What else does it say?"

  "Poison detected - sedative. Special status ending in 10 minutes."

  "Yes, that would be our valium. Just 10 minutes, huh? I already wondered how you could still speak after that injection."

  "Yeah....okay. Let's see what else. A minor concussion. Microfractures on the left ... what the heck.... Tym Tyma Membrane?"

  "The Tympanic membrane?"

  "Yes?"

  "It's a part of your ears."

  "Great, and I thought that they were just fluffy."

  He smiles. "They still are. Do you see any other messages?"

  "Uh-huh. It says...extensive damage to the wing-support structure, minimal blood loss. Then it says minimal damage to the epi..ep.... epidermal yer due to excessive heat exposure. 17 bruises, and 2 microfractures in the lumbar region.
