9. Old man with candy

“My friend ariel is also a bartender, and we work

together in the bar. Two weeks ago, we decided to

clean the whiskey shelves from bad quality whiskey.

The problem is that people in our bar know how to

appreciate whiskey, and we found it too hard to get

rid of the bad stuff. So, we asked the manager if we

can throw it and of cores the answer was a hard no.

but, he said that in the and of a shift we can drink

and he would prefer that we drink from the cheaper

drinks, so that what we did. Last night we had a half

full bottle of grant’s, and in the middle of our shift

ariel challenge me to drink it all. The and of that

story is that I was the one to close the bar, and I was

after a long shift of high end alcohol and cocktails, so

I decided to take the challenge and drink and go

home. Now. Let me tell you, that thing was nasty, I

almost threw up. So, I closed the bar and went to my

friend’s apartment. And what happened next is on

  you to explain Tolverstov.”

Tolverstov looked like he has a lot of questions about

alcohol and the people drinking it, but he nodded.

“Tell me what happened, and I’ll explain what I can.”

“Okey. As I said, I was very much drunk, so I don’t

know if I remember everything. I remember myself

entering the building, and then I think it happened. I

opened the door to the building and let it close

behind me, my eyes where closed, and when I

opened them, I saw that I’m in a strange room, the

room that your people found me. I thought that I

entered the wrong building, and maybe I did, but

  apparently somehow, I teleported here.”

  “Interesting.”

  Nathaniel raised one eyebrow.

“Anyway. I spent some time in that room trying to

drunkenly understand where I am and what’s

happening. I found out that I have a companion. Is

  that normal?”

Tolverstov’s eyebrows went up. “You have a

  companion”?

  “Yes.”

“that’s usually something that people achieve in high

levels. The levels that use tools like the one you

  have.”

“Well, I have one. Possibly two.”

  “Two what, companions”?

  “yes”

“Why don’t you tell me about your companion.

  Possibly companions”

“In my world there is a thing called virtual assistant,

its like secretary, but it’s not sentient. People use it

for a lot of things like information, appointment

schedule, alarm clock, and so on.”

“I’m confused. Didn’t you say that your world has no

  magic”?

Nathaniel smiled. “My world has no magic.”

“You just described magical being in your world that

  people use.”

  “it’s not magic. Believe me.”

Tolverstov looked skeptical. “So, what about the non

  magical assistant from your world”?

“One of those assistants is called Siri, and my

companion is Siri but sentient. and she live in my

mind and can read my thoughts. She claims to have

no idea of what happened. She said that she came to

existent in the room I teleported to, and she have all

  my knowledge.”

“that’s make sense, companions are created in their

master and are imprinted by him or her.”

“She already has an ability, and I don’t.”

“Well. It’s an unusual case. If you what essentially is

level zero, you can’t have abilities. And companions

are created with one ability. However, this is the first

time I hear about a level zero with a companion. I

guess that what happens when you do that.”

  “Her ability is spectator.”

“that’s make sense. That why you can understand

our language, but you can’t speak it.”

“Why is it making sense? I would like you to explain

it to me. If you will.”

“Of cores. The abilities are shaped by the absorber,

in that case, the master of the absorber. You needed

the ability to see and hear everything, and to learn

everything, so your companion ability is spectator.”

“wouldn’t it make mor sense to get something more

  combat related”?

“When she got the ability, you were confused, you

were trying to understand where you are and what is

happening, so information related ability is more

  appropriate.”

“Now that you’re saying it like that it makes sense.”

“What about your other maybe companion”?

  “Well, it’s the system.”

  “What system”?

“I have a system that control and manage my

  powers.”

Tolverstov leaned forward enthusiastically like he just

  found a gold mine.

“How is that system works”? he asked.

“it’s in the form of black letters floating in the air that

  only I can see.”

  “and”?

  “There’s main menu.”

  “Like menu in a restaurant”?

  “Sort of”

“Is it a list of your powers”?

“no. it’s the main menu. It’s a list of different menus

  for information and powers management.”

  “Like an index”?

“Dude. It’ll be a lot easier if you’ll shut up and listen.”

  “Sorry. Go on.”

“it’s not like index, it’s a menu, you choose a menu

and open it from the main menu.”

  “Okey.”

  Nathaniel took a long breath.

“The first menu is simply my name. it’s showing my

level, my points, and my abilities, which I don’t have

any. Then it shows that I have a companion, Siri, and

her abilities, which is one, spectator.”

“What do you mean by points”?

“I don’t know, next to the level it shows how much

  points I have.”

  Tolverstov thought for a second.

“Maybe its referring to your progress to the next

  level.”

“Probably. it says that I have zero out of ten abilities,

and for Siri one out of five.”

“that’s weird, in level zero you can’t have abilities at

  all.”

“Well, I have none… anyway. Theres also my

inventory and more stuff on the main menu.”

“And you think that this system is a companion?

  Why?”

“Because it can read my mind, and Siri said that it

  tried to communicate with her.”

Tolverstov suddenly looked like a kid that just found

  out about ice cream.

“How did it tried to communicate? What did it say?”

“Siri said that it felt like someone behind a wall

giving her a high five. Like a high five from another

  dimension.”

  Tolverstov jumped to his feet.

“You have no idea how groundbreaking this is” his

hands were shaking, and his eyes sparkled. “What

more information do you have about the system”?

  “that’s it, I think.”

“Well, we’ll have to help you gain levels, and study

  your advancement.”

Nathaniel didn’t like tolvertov’s look, its maid him

feel like a monkey in a lab.

“Well, easy there boy, I’m not a lab monkey.”

  Tolverstov looked surprised.

“I said that I’m going to help you.”

“You starting to sound like an old man with a candy.”

  This time Tolverstov looked confused.

“Why are you saying it like it’s a bad thing”?

“Because I don’t like ‘that’ kind of candy.”

  “Old man candy”?

  “Exactly.”

Tolverstov looked lost. “I have no idea what you’re

  talking about.”

“Your parents didn’t teach you anything”?

Tolverstov looked at him shocked. “My parents are

  the reason I know everything.”

“Not everything apparently.” Nathaniel said bitterly.

  “What happened to you”?

Nathaniel suddenly looked cheerful. “Nothing. How

about we start with my magic advancement.”

Tolverstov looked at him for a moment.

“Okey. But there’s things you need to know first.”
